How To Reach Bangkok From Kolkata

An adventure of a lifetime beckons tourists to Bangkok

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

By AirBy RoadBy TrainBy Sea
Kolkata to Bangkok2.0 hours---

How far is Bangkok from Kolkata? Kolkata to Bangkok is about 1,610 km (roughly 1,000 miles) in a straight line across the Bay of Bengal and Myanmar. A nonstop flight covers it in about 2 hours 40 minutes, and there are around 13 nonstops a day, so flying is the fast, cheap and obvious choice. There is no direct train, and the only drivable route runs overland through Myanmar and eats about five days.

Kolkata is the closest Indian metro to Bangkok, which is exactly why this route is so easy. The whole trip is one short flight: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) to Bangkok in under three hours, with IndiGo, Thai Airways and Air India all flying nonstop. You can go by road if the journey itself is the point, but the honest overland route crosses Myanmar and takes the better part of a week, and there is no through train at any stage. This guide lays out every option with the real distances, times and fares, the 2026 Thailand visa rule for Indian travellers, and a straight verdict on which choice actually makes sense.

Kolkata to Bangkok at a Glance

Here is the whole journey in one view. The figures below are for the Kolkata to Bangkok leg, the route almost everyone flies.

Mode Route from Kolkata Distance Time Indicative cost
By Air (recommended) Kolkata (CCU) to Bangkok, nonstop to Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK) ~1,610 km / ~1,000 mi (air) ~2 hrs 40 min nonstop; ~13 flights a day Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 one-way
By Train No direct train. Fly to Singapore, then take the rail leg up to Bangkok ~1,900 km on the Singapore rail leg About 30 hrs on the rail leg, plus the flight Higher than flying; not practical
By Road Kolkata to Myanmar (Moreh / Tamu) to Thailand, then south to Bangkok ~5,800 km via Myanmar About 5 days of actual travel Fuel + Myanmar permit; adventure only
By Sea No scheduled passenger ship on this route N/A N/A N/A

Costs are indicative and move with season and how far ahead you book. Confirm live fares before you commit. Bangkok also runs 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Kolkata, so set your watch forward when you land.

By Air: The Fast, Cheap and Obvious Choice

Flying wins on every count. The Kolkata to Bangkok air distance is about 1,610 km, and a nonstop flight from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) takes around 2 hours 40 minutes. Because Kolkata is the closest Indian metro to Bangkok, this is one of the shortest international hops out of India, and it is busy: IndiGo, Thai Airways and Air India all fly nonstop, which adds up to roughly 13 flights a day between them. That gives you real choice on timing and price. Add a layover and the trip stretches to six hours or more, usually for a lower fare, but on this route the nonstop is normally both faster and barely more expensive, so there is little reason to connect.

One detail most guides skip: Bangkok has two airports. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) handles the full-service flights and is where IndiGo, Thai Airways and Air India land. Don Mueang (DMK) is the low-cost hub, used by Thai AirAsia and Air India Express on some dates. Check your ticket before you book onward transport, because the two are on opposite sides of the city and a taxi between them can take an hour in traffic. From either airport a metered cab or the Airport Rail Link is the simplest way into town, and once you are in Bangkok the BTS Skytrain, tuk-tuks and Chao Phraya express boats are cheap and fast.

Fares and the cheapest time to fly

Nonstop one-way economy fares usually sit between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000, with IndiGo often the lead-in price. They swing with the season: lowest through the mid-year monsoon and the summer, when demand for Thailand dips, and highest across the November to February winter peak and the Indian festival breaks. If your dates are flexible, flying midweek and booking three to six weeks out is where the cheap seats are. For the month-by-month picture, see our guide to the best time to visit Bangkok.

By Train: Why There Is No Direct Train

There is no direct train from Kolkata to Bangkok, and there is no continuous rail line across Myanmar that a traveller can ride straight through to Thailand. The workaround is a mixed route: fly from Kolkata to Singapore, then take the well-run rail network up through Malaysia to Bangkok, a journey of about 1,900 km that runs close to 30 hours on the rail legs alone. It also needs Singapore and Malaysia visas on top of your Thailand entry. A second option some adventurers use is the rail line east to Imphal, then a bus across the Moreh border into Myanmar, but that is a slow, permit-heavy overland trip rather than a scheduled service. For a normal Bangkok holiday, treat the train as a scenic detour, not a practical way to arrive: the nonstop flight does the same distance in under three hours.

By Road: The Real Kolkata to Myanmar to Thailand Route

Driving from Kolkata to Bangkok is genuinely possible, and Kolkata is the best Indian city to start from because it sits closest to the eastern land border. The route does not go through Nepal, China or Cambodia. The only drivable corridor runs east out of India, through Myanmar, and into Thailand. From Kolkata you head north-east and cross into Myanmar at the Moreh to Tamu border in Manipur, drive on via Mandalay along the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, and enter Thailand at the Mae Sot crossing before turning south to Bangkok.

Plan on about 5,800 km and roughly five days of actual travel. Online route planners will quote a cheerful figure of under 3,000 km, but they assume you can drive Myanmar freely. In reality the Myanmar leg needs a transit permit, and foreign vehicles are often required to move with an approved guide or convoy, which is what turns a two-day estimate into the better part of a week. Here is how the trip breaks down.

Segment Rough route Reality check
Kolkata to the border Kolkata to Moreh / Tamu (Manipur) 1 to 2 days of driving across east India
Across Myanmar Tamu to Mandalay to Myawaddy Myanmar transit permit; guide or convoy often required
Into Thailand Mae Sot border to Bangkok About 4 to 5 hours from the border once you are through

You also need a Myanmar visa or permit on top of your Thailand entry, and the border formalities can add a full day. It is a real overland adventure, not a shortcut. For an ordinary Bangkok trip the nonstop flight is faster, cheaper and far less paperwork, so treat the road trip as the holiday itself rather than a way to get there.

Do Indians Need a Visa for Thailand in 2026?

Yes, and this changed recently, so plan for it before you book. Until 19 May 2026 Indian passport holders got 60 days visa-free. From 19 May 2026 that scheme ended, and you now need one of two entry routes:

Visa on Arrival (VoA): 15 days, fee THB 2,000 (about Rs 5,900), paid in cash, with one photo, an onward ticket and proof of funds. Best for a short trip.

Tourist e-Visa (TR): applied for online before you travel, 60 days single-entry, and extendable by another 30 days inside Thailand. Best for a longer stay.

On top of either one, every arrival must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours of landing. It is free, it replaces the old paper arrival card, and immigration will ask for it, so fill it in before you fly. This route-and-visa combination is the part almost no flight-comparison site explains, which is exactly why it is worth getting right up front.

Naveen's 14 days trip to Bangkok

Overall, we had a very good experience with our travel agent. The trip was planned well, all commitments were fulfilled as promised, and the coordination throughout the journey was smooth. The team was responsive, professional, and ensured that transfers, sightseeing, and bookings were arranged prop
erly, making the trip hassle-free. The only major disappointment was the hotel selected in Pattaya. The rooms were quite compact, we encountered cockroaches in the room, and the towels provided were not up to the expected standard. This part of the experience could have been much better. The itinerary was well designed overall; however, for some outdoor attractions, scheduling visits during the evening would have been preferable, especially during the summer season, to avoid the intense daytime heat and make sightseeing more comfortable. Despite these points, we appreciate the effort and support provided by the travel agent. The trip was enjoyable, and with a little more attention to hotel selection and timing of certain activities, the experience could have been excellent.

I recently completed my Thailand trip with Travelopedia, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. made the trip completely stress-free for us.

Vrushabh's 7 days trip to Bangkok

We recently booked an 11-day, 10-night land package to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, covering Bangkok, Phuket, and Krabi. Traveling with a 2-year-old can be challenging, but the overall experience was smooth and well-coordinated. Our itinerary was packed with great activities. In Bangkok, Safa
ri World was a huge hit with our little one, and the temple tours were beautiful. The Krabi leg was fantastic—the 7 Island Tour and the Jungle Tour were standouts. In Phuket, the Phi Phi Island tour and the Old City tour were both well-managed and enjoyable. Since we only opted for the land package and airport transfers, we relied heavily on their punctuality. The transfers were seamless, which is a massive relief when you’re hauling luggage and a toddler! The only disappointment was the Elephant Sanctuary tour. It felt very rushed, lasting only about an hour and a half, which didn't quite meet our expectations compared to the quality of the other excursions. Overall, we had a wonderful family holiday. Travtree Holidays provided great service and reliable transport. Highly recommended for families looking for a well-organized Thailand experience!

We recently booked our family trip to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, and it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. The entire itinerary was very well organized, making the trip smooth and stress-free—especially important when traveling with young children (our ki
ds are 2 and 5 years old). All pick-ups were perfectly on time, and the vehicles provided were clean, comfortable, and spacious, which made commuting easy and relaxing for the whole family. The hotels arranged for us were excellent—family-friendly, comfortable, and conveniently located. Everything was thoughtfully planned, allowing us to enjoy each destination without any hassle. A special mention goes to our visits to Siam Ocean World (sea life) and Safari World & Marine Park. Both experiences were incredibly impressive and became the highlight of our trip. Siam Water World was fantastic for the kids, with exciting views of the sea creatures penguins etc that they thoroughly enjoyed. Safari World was equally amazing—the safari drive and shows were captivating, and seeing the animals up close was a memorable experience for both adults and children. Overall, Travtree Holidays ensured a seamless, enjoyable, and perfectly managed vacation for our family. We truly appreciate their professionalism and attention to detail and would highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Thailand—especially families traveling with young kids.

    Bangkok Travel FAQs

What is the distance from Kolkata to Bangkok?

Kolkata to Bangkok is about 1,610 km (roughly 1,000 miles) in a straight line. By air, a nonstop flight covers it in around 2 hours 40 minutes. By road, the only drivable route runs overland through Myanmar and stretches to about 5,800 km because it cannot cut straight across the Bay of Bengal.

How long is the Kolkata to Bangkok flight?

A nonstop flight from Kolkata (CCU) to Bangkok takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. It is one of the shortest international hops out of India, since Kolkata is the closest Indian metro to Bangkok. A connecting flight with one stop takes longer, usually six hours or more, and is worth it only when it is noticeably cheaper on your dates.

Is there a direct flight from Kolkata to Bangkok?

Yes. IndiGo, Thai Airways and Air India all fly nonstop from Kolkata to Bangkok, adding up to roughly 3 to 4 flights a day between them. Most land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK); Thai AirAsia and Air India Express use Don Mueang (DMK) on some dates, so check which airport your ticket lands at before booking onward transport.

Is there a train from Kolkata to Bangkok?

No. There is no direct train and no continuous rail line across Myanmar. The workaround is to fly to Singapore and take the rail network up through Malaysia to Bangkok, about 1,900 km and close to 30 hours on the rail legs, plus Singapore and Malaysia visas. For a normal holiday it is far simpler to fly nonstop.

What is the cheapest way to fly from Kolkata to Bangkok?

Nonstop one-way fares usually run between ₹8,000 and ₹10,000, with IndiGo often the lead-in price. Fares are lowest through the mid-year monsoon and summer and highest across the November to February peak. Book three to six weeks ahead and fly midweek for the cheapest seats.

Do Indians need a visa for Thailand in 2026?

Indian passport holders no longer get visa-free entry. Thailand ended the 60-day visa-free arrangement for Indians in May 2026, so you now either apply for the e-Visa (up to 60 days) in advance or take visa-on-arrival for THB 2,000, valid 15 days, and everyone must file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before landing. The rule changes periodically, so confirm the current 2026 position at the official Thai e-Visa portal. For the full arrival picture, see our how to reach Thailand from Mumbai guide.

Which Bangkok airport do Kolkata flights land at, Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang?

Both are used. Full-service nonstops on IndiGo, Thai Airways and Air India land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), the main international airport east of the city. Low-cost services such as Thai AirAsia and Air India Express use Don Mueang (DMK) to the north on some dates. The two are on opposite sides of the city, so confirm your airport before arranging a pickup.
