The Art Institute of Chicago is the second-largest art museum in the country, second only to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Known for its excellent collection and curatorial efforts, this institute-cum-museum is one of the major attractions of Chicago, especially among the art enthusiasts and students of art history. Its actual collection records nearly 300,000 artworks from different centuries and countries. The museum is open to the public since 1879 and in its current location since 1893. Along with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, it is one of the few remaining unified art institutions of USA.

History of Art Institute of Chicago

In 1866, a group of 35 artists founded the Chicago Academy of Design. In 2015, the Art Institute of Chicago museum witnessed the greatest donation ever made in art history. Two eminent collectors’ donation is a collection of world’s greatest post-war pop art ever assembled, with work of artists like Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Roy Lichtenstein and many more named.

Among the greatest Art Institute of Chicago, exhibits are Pablo Picasso’s The Old Guitarist, Grant Wood’s American Gothic and Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. Other than these, the different categories of Art Institute of Chicago artworks are modern and contemporary (Picasso, Henry Matisse), Impressionist and Post-Impressionist (Claude Monet, Georges Seurat), Renaissance art and a whole range of Asia, African, American and European artworks. Art Institute of Chicago paintings, drawings, photography and textile collections are no less than the original paintings. All of them display exemplary original handiwork and reflects a centuries-old culture of every continent.
