Located at the center of the Grant Park, the Buckingham Fountain is considered as one of the largest fountains in the world. Built in 1927, the Buckingham Fountain is considered as the front gate or the main entrance of the city due to its location. The fountain was built in a rococo wedding cake style and had some imprints from the Latona fountain too which can be clearly viewed in the design of the fountain. The Buckingham Fountain represents the majestic Lake Michigan and is visited by tourists from all around the world.
The majestic view of the fountain and the water shows which are continuously conducted throughout the day can be viewed easily in Grant Park. The Buckingham Fountain comes under the U.S historic district contributing property and is even considered as a world heritage site. The fountain is no doubt one of the oldest fountains but it has been renovated several times in order to preserve the original designs with some preserving element.
The Buckingham fountain is even considered as one of the best places for wedding photo-shoots and one can see various couples in there having their pictures clicked. The architecture of the Buckingham Fountain is one to be marveled at. The fountain consists of four horses facing sideways which represent the four states Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana. The Buckingham fountain was designed by architect Edward H. Bennett and the various figurines and statues were the brain-child of Marcel F. Loyau. The fountain is a must visit place and should not be missed. The beautiful water shows in here would mesmerize you.
Sound And Light Show Of Buckingham Fountain
There are a total of three pumps that power the water displays. Pump 1 is the primary one and is responsible for keeping the fountain active throughout the day. There is a total of 134 jets in the fountain with a water capacity of 1.5 million gallons. With favorable wind conditions, the fountain has the capacity to recirculate 14,100 approx. gallons of water in a minute through its 134 powerful jets. The Buckingham fountain has 820 lights in total operating automatically since 1980. The light effect is very soothing and resembles that of soft moonlight.

Buckingham Fountain is named after Kate Buckingham who dedicated this fountain in memory of her brother, Clarence.
Buckingham Fountain holds up to 6 million liters of water.
The fountain is equipped with a security alarm which is monitored by the security personnel 24*7 because the fountain is built from precious material and holds cultural and historical importance for Chicago.
Buckingham Fountain is 85 meters in diameter and the fountain goes to a height of 7 meters which makes it one of the largest structures in the world.
