Navy Pier in Chicago
Lose Yourself in the Marvel of the Sea
Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 27 reviews )
Navy Pier, Chicago (USA)
Navy Pier is not a location in Chicago – it is more like a melting pot. Located on the shoreline of Lake Michigan stretching for 3,300ft into the blueness, the Navy Pier of Chicago is at present the top leisure destination in the Midwest. The vibrant pier, centred on the iconic Ferris wheel, encompasses fifty acres of gardens, shops, restaurants and other fun places to spend an evening.
History of Navy Pier
The Navy pier has had a very interesting past. Its purpose has taken big turns over the years, depending on what the country was going through during that time. It was originally built in 1916 to serve as a dock for freights. Certain events like expositions were held here back in the day. When World War I broke out, it provided land to American soldiers, Red Cross and Home Defence and after it was over, it was renamed from Municipal Pier to Navy Pier to honour the Navy of USA. During the next World War, it was once again set up as a military station. It is said that over 200 American fighter planes rest at the bottom of Michigan which went down during military training. Years after the navy moved out, it was redesigned and opened up to the public in 1995 as the entertainment centre it is today. So, when you go on a Navy Pier tour, this history is important to remember.
Attractions in Navy Pier
Navy Pier attractions are the favourite way of Chicago people to spend an evening of family fun. The best attraction on the list is the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel. Located at the centre of the park, the Centennial Ferris Wheel rises for 200ft into the sky, offering mind-numbing, unparalleled views of the city from the topmost car. You can enjoy the carousel, wave swinger, remote control boats and miniature golf course in the Navy Pier Park as well. Other notable attractions here are Funhouse Maze – a 4000sqft worth of tunnels and mazes, Crystal Garden – a 50ft glass atrium botanical garden, Chicago Children’s Museum and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre.
Navy Pier Events
The Navy Pier in Chicago has a plethora of events happening every year round. The people at the pier committee release an event calendar every year. Most of the events on the list are free and there are special ticketed events as well. As per the 2019 Navy Pier Events calendar, there are a few great lineups like Live on the Lake, Wave Wall Wax, Chi-Soul Fest, Skahespeare plays in the parks, so on and so forth. The ticketed events include the likes of daily cruises, musicals, plays, fireworks, Neighborhood Artisan Market, Shoreline Sightseeing Wine Tasting Cruise, and many more. It is advisable to always check the current events schedule at the official website of Navy Pier Chicago before making a visit.
