History of Long Island

Before the Europeans came, Long Island was inhabited by the Lenape people. The Native Americans records kept by the Europeans suggest that Long Island was referred to as Sewanhaka. The very first settlements on the Long Island was by the English on the Gardiners Island. During the American Revolutionary War was captured by the English. However, General Washington won over the islands, and many prominent families gave their support.

Until this day, the beauty of Long Island, New York remains wonderful, and it is one of the largest car-free communities in the world.
