Lake George is located in the Adirondack Mountains, Warren / Essex Counties, New York.

It had a maximum depth of 196 ft, the maximum length of 51.8 km, the maximum width of 4.8 km and a surface area of 120 km. It is in the South-East base of the Adirondack Mountains in North-East. Lake George in New York drains into the St. Lawrence River drainage basin and Lake Champlain. It is along the historical paths between St. Lawrence Rivers and the Hudson, therefore lies on the direct route between Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Albany, New York.

History of Lake George

Lake George’s history indicates that local Native American named the lake as the Andia-ta-roc-te originally, and then Jesse Fenimore Cooper called it Horican in his narrative Last of the Mohicans.  On 28th August 1755, this lake was occupied by William Johnson who led British Colonial forces and renamed this lake to Lake George for King George II.

The battle of Lake George was fought between the forces of France and Britain on 8th of September in 1755, which resulted in a strategic win for the British. And order for the construction of a military fortification at the Southern end of the lake was made by Johnson. Eventually, this lake ended up with the nickname of Queen of American Lakes.
