About Belgium Tourism

In spite of being a small country along the western coast of Europe, Belgium has earned quite a bit of reputation for itself over the years. History enthusiasts would know it as the Battleground of Europe, a moniker which has only been strengthened by the two world wars. Bibliophiles would know about Belgium as the home to the famous Hercule Poirot and everyone’s beloved Tintin. Belgium does not disappoint when it comes to tourism either.

Historical destinations in Belgium

Belgium is a country with a heritage as enriched as they come. Be it the grand palace and guildhalls of Brussels, the belfries, medieval streets and canals of Bruges or the battlefields of Flanders, Belgium tourism is a wholesome journey through a landscape dipped in rich cultural and historic heritage.

Beaches in Belgium

Belgium is surrounded by countries like France, Netherlands, Germany and Luxembourg on all sides except northwest, where it has the North Sea lapping up its shores. The country has many underrated seaside destinations, which are perfect for quick getaways. Ostend, only 30 minutes away from Brussels by train, is the only true City at the Sea, with a 9-km long beach and Sand Sculpture Festival during June-August. Nieuwpoort is perfect for aquatic sports, while Blankenberge is where you can find an exciting nightlife.

Here are the best cities in Belgium to visit.

1. Brussels

The capital of Belgium is, for many, an integral part of European tour. In its essence, the city is very business-like, being the administrative centre of the EU. But that does not mean there aren’t things to see here. The Grand Place at the centre of the city and the six guildhalls that surround it are spectacular to say the least. The Manneken Pis, which is literally a statue of a little boy peeing, is kind of a Belgian inside joke, and thus a must-visit on your tour. Do visit the Palais Royale and Notre Dame Du Sablon cathedral for an even better reflection of the city.

2. Bruges

The Belfry tower in the heart of Bruges’ market square is the most important structure in the city, if not the most attraction. After 366 steps and a panting heart, you will be rewarded with the most breath-taking and beautiful view of Bruges from its 83-metre top. Basilica of the Holy Blood in Bruges houses a part of Christ himself – a cloth with His holy blood on it. Make sure to catch a glimpse of Michelangelo’s masterpiece Madonna with Child in Church of Our Lady and to take a boat ride in the canals.

3. Antwerp

The port city of River Scheldt, Antwerp is a city whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. The centre of the town houses the famous, centuries-old Diamond District with the best rocks one can dream of in a Solitaire. The Plantin-Moretus Museum of Printing is a must-visit for writers or literature-enthusiasts.

4. Ghent

A tour of Belgium country is incomplete without Ghent. This port city at the confluence of Scheldt and Leie is a cultural hub. At the heart of Ghent lies the pedestrianized area with medieval era architectures to behold, like the 10th-12th century Gravensteen Castle or the Graslei – a row of guildhalls by the River Leie or the 14th century belfry.

5. Ypres

Located in the West Flanders, Ypres is known for its battlefields. A tour through the many cemeteries, memorials and war museums will give you a clear picture of what it meant for Belgium to be right at the centre of the two World Wars. The trenches from the WWI are still there as a tribute to the fallen and is one of the major Belgium destinations.
