Town Hall, Brussels (Belgium)
Historic yet hip, confident yet modest, Brussels is multicultural to its roots. And, the center of this magnificent city is decorated by the mesmerizing architectural wonder of the Brussels Town Hall. A gothic building from the Middle ages, it is located on the Grand Place. Being the only remaining medieval structure of the Grand Palace, the Town Hall in Brussels is considered as a masterpiece of civil Gothic architecture. The oldest part of this grand building is the east wing, the construction of which was completed in the year 1420. Imposing statues of nobles and saints decorate the facade. The original sculptures here are now preserved in the King's house, however astute replicas of these artworks still deck the halls of this ancient structure. The stunning 93 meter high tower of the Town Hall in Brussels, Belgium was constructed in the year 1454 with a 5 meter high statue of the archangel Michael slaying a dragon or a devil, made out of metal sits royally atop the tower.
Originally the East wing, the oldest part of the present day town hall, was built between 1402 and 1420 to stand alone with no plans of expansion or additions. However with the increase in the number of offices, especially after the inclusion of the crafts guilds brought on a bout of expansion, where the houses surround the original structure were included in the main structure. In the year 1444 a right wing was added to the building which was completed in 1449 while the imposing and majestic tower with the metal statue of Archangel Michael glorified on the top was added in the year 1455.
During many of its restorations that occured in the 19th century, the insides of the Brussels Town Hall were adored with tapestries, paintings and sculptures that represented the local and regional history which remain till today, one of the most attractive things within the Town hall. This historical building also served as a hospital and opened its doors to the refugees in the start of World War I and has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage sight.
Architecture of Town Hall
Considered as a masterpiece of Brabantine Gothic architecture, the facade of Town Hall is decked with several statues of saints, nobles, and other metaphorical figures; though, the sculptures present in the building are mere reproductions. The real sculptures are stored in the city museum across the Grand Place.
