About Andaman and Nicobar

White sand beaches. Crystal-clear waters. Coral reefs teeming with life. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands feel like a postcard come to life. Tucked away in the southeastern corner of India, this tropical archipelago offers the perfect mix of adventure, serenity, and history—all without needing a passport if you're an Indian citizen.

If you're tired of over-commercialised beaches and crowded hill stations, the Andaman offers something refreshingly different. These islands are still largely unspoiled, with raw natural beauty and a relaxed pace of life. Whether you're a beach bum, history nerd, scuba enthusiast, or just someone who craves peace, there's something here for you.

Places To Visit In Andaman & Nicobar Islands

It is famous for its underwater treasures of vibrant corals, colourful fish, and a variety of beautiful plant species.  To reach North Bay Island in the Andaman Islands, you'll need to take a ferry or boat from Port Blair. The trip typically takes between 15 and 45 minutes.  Ross Island Ross Island is located 2 kilometres east of Port Blair Now known as Subhash Chandra Bose Island, Ross Island is largely barren. This underrated tourist destination offers a relaxing experience for visitors and is perfect for history buffs. Ross Island is one of Port Blair city’s closest islands and can be easily reached via a short (15-minute) boat ride from the Aberdeen Jetty (inside the water sports complex).  Cellular Jail Atlanta Point, Sri Vijaya Puram, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Also known as "Kala Pani Jail", Cellular Jail is one of the most popular places to visit in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Cellular Jail is located at Atlanta Point in Port Blair. You can reach there easily via public or private transport.  Elephant Beach Havelock Island, Andaman & Nicobar Islands Elephant Beach is a beautiful tourist destination in Havelock Island. To reach Elephant Beach, located on Havelock Island, you have two main options: by boat or on foot. The boat ride is a scenic 30-minute journey from Havelock Island's Radhanagar Beach to the beach. It is around 9 kilometres from central Port Blair and easily accessible via road.  Baratang Baratang Island is located 150 Kilometres north of Port Blair. Baratang Island represents the ancient wilderness of the Andaman Islands, featuring mangrove creeks, mud volcanoes, and limestone caves. To reach Baratang Island in the Andaman Islands from Port Blair, you have two main options: by road (private car or bus) or by ferry. The most convenient and comfortable option is a private car or private AC bus, but a government bus is more affordable. Then, you will have to take a ferry to Baratang Island.

Best Time To Visit Andaman Islands

Generally, the months from November to April are considered to be the best time to visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. During this time, the weather is pleasant, and the humidity is fairly low, making it ideal for outdoor activities and water sports. The average temperature during this period can range anywhere from 20°C to 30°C, making it perfect for tourists to explore the islands and soak in the natural beauty of the place.

Tropical Climate: The Andaman Islands have a tropical climate, making it an eco-destination all year round.

No Winter: There is no winter season in the Andaman Islands. These islands only have a summer and a rainy season, with a short autumn period.

Temperature: The average temperature in the Andaman Islands can range from 20°C to 30°C.

Frequent Rainfall: The rain can occur at any time of the day. It is advised to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and carry an umbrella whenever possible.

No Pollution: The Andaman Islands boast very clean air quality. The air pollutant level is at a very minimal 15.6 µg/m3.

How To Reach Andaman & Nicobar

There are primarily 2 ways of reaching the Andaman and Nicobar Islands:

By Air: There are regular flights from various major cities across India, such as Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai to Andaman's capital, Port Blair. The Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair has several airlines like Air India, GoAir, IndiGo, Spicejet, and Vistara.

By Sea: The other way to reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is by ship. There are cargo ships to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam which reach Port Blair's Haddo Jetty. It is to be noted, however, that reaching the Andaman and Nicobar via boat can be time-consuming. It is also to be kept in mind that these ships that run between Indian cities and the Andaman are not luxury cruise ships and may not provide ample comfort.

Things To Do In The Andaman Islands

Radhanagar Beach (Havelock Island)

Rated among Asia’s best beaches. Perfect for sunsets, swimming, and relaxing.

Tip: Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.

Scuba Diving & Snorkelling

Try in Havelock (Elephant Beach) or Neil Island. Great coral reefs and marine life.

Tip: Even non-swimmers can try scuba diving with certified instructors.

Cellular Jail Light & Sound Show (Port Blair)

Learn the island’s freedom struggle history. The evening show is worth it.

Tip: Book tickets in advance, especially in peak season.

Ross Island (Now Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island)

Ruins of British administrative buildings amidst dense forest.

Tip: Ferries leave from Aberdeen Jetty, Port Blair.

Baratang Island

See limestone caves, mud volcanoes, and dense mangrove forests.

Tip: Requires early morning permits and convoy travel due to tribal reserves.

Glass Bottom Boat Rides & Sea Walk

Available at North Bay Island and Elephant Beach.

Tip: Ideal for families or those who don’t want to dive/snorkel.

Essential Tips for Tourists

Keep the Climate in Mind: The Andaman Islands have a tropical climate with two major seasons, monsoon and dry. It is to be kept in mind, however, that the climate can still be quite unpredictable. Before making any plans, it is best to check weather updates.

Things to Carry: It is best to travel light and carry only the essentials. This typically includes light, breathable clothes, sunscreen, swimwear, a waterproof bag, a small first-aid kit, and insect repellent.

Carry Sufficient Cash: Make sure to carry sufficient cash at all times. Not all places in the Andaman have a good internet connection or an option for digital payments such as UPI. Small establishments like local eateries, taxi services, or small shops also quite often prefer cash over UPI.

Keep the Commute in Mind: The islands offer options such as private taxis, auto rickshaws, and local buses. Ferries are a popular means of travel between the islands. Booking these in advance can save time and ensure a smooth journey. It is one of the important travel tips for the Andaman.

Mobile and Internet Connectivity: Due to its remote location, internet connection and network in the Andaman can be irregular. Public Wi-Fi is not commonly found, but many hotels and resorts do offer it. For stable internet connectivity, it’s suggested to buy a local SIM card from network providers available in Port Blair, like BSNL, which has the widest coverage.

Avoid Taking Valuables to the Beach: While it can be tempting to take your smartphone or camera to the beach, it is wise to leave expensive items in a safe place, such as your hotel room or resort. The beaches in Andaman can be crowded, and leaving valuables unattended increases the risk of theft or accidental loss.

Rakesh's 6 days trip to Andaman

I recently visited Andaman and had a disappointing experience with the travel agent Mr Roy, He misguided us about scuba diving rates, charged much higher than local prices despite our tickets showing 25% off, and even told us not to ask locals about the rates and to say we were “not interested.” He
kept insisting that slots were very limited and pushed us to book immediately by creating false urgency. The complimentary snorkeling included in our package was another big letdown. They took us into barely 1–2 feet of water, asked us to just put our face in, and called it snorkeling. Then they said this is the only complimentary demo included in our package and demanded ₹1200 if we wanted to see actual fish and enjoy snorkling. It felt completely misleading and frustrating. Overall, trip was good and memorable but due to above issues trip was not 100% satisfactory. I hope this issues wont be repeated in the future Hotel and cab service was good
