Sea Walk in Andaman
Walk on the seabed and watch the beautiful underwater world pass you by
Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 8092 reviews )
A sea walk in Andaman lets you walk on the ocean floor about 6–7 metres down, wearing a clear glass helmet fed with a steady supply of oxygen, and you do not need to know how to swim. It is one of the calmest ways to see live coral and reef fish up close, which is why families, non-swimmers and first-timers pick it over scuba diving. There are two places to do it: North Bay Island, a short boat ride from Port Blair and the most popular spot, and Elephant Beach near Havelock (Swaraj Dweep). This guide covers both venues, cost, timings, age limits, safety and how to book.

What Is a Sea Walk and How Does It Work?
A sea walk (also called sea walking or an underwater walk) is a shallow-water activity where you stand and walk on the seabed while a large glass dome over your head keeps your face dry and supplies oxygen through a tube connected to the boat above. Because the helmet holds an air pocket, you breathe normally, exactly as you do on land, and your head never gets wet.
Here is what actually happens once you reach the platform:
- A trained instructor gives a short briefing and a few simple hand signals.
- You climb down a ladder while the weighted helmet is lowered onto your shoulders.
- You settle on the seabed at about 6–7 metres and walk slowly along a fixed path.
- An instructor stays with you the whole time, often feeding the fish so they gather around you.
- After roughly 20 minutes underwater you return to the surface the same way.
Because you walk rather than dive and the helmet does the breathing for you, a sea walk is well suited to people who are not strong swimmers, as well as children and older travellers. The one important caution: anyone with heart problems, serious ear or respiratory conditions, or who is pregnant should avoid the activity or take a doctor's approval first.
Where to Sea Walk, North Bay Island vs Elephant Beach
North Bay Island (near Port Blair), the main spot
North Bay Island is where most sea walks in Andaman happen, and it is the easiest option if you are based in Port Blair. It sits just a 15–20 minute boat ride from the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex, the reef is shallow and rich with coral, and the same trip can be combined with a glass-bottom boat ride, snorkelling or a visit to Cellular Jail. If you only have one day in Port Blair and want to do a sea walk, choose North Bay.
Elephant Beach (near Havelock / Swaraj Dweep)
Elephant Beach, reached by boat from Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), is the second option and works best if you are already staying on Havelock for Radhanagar Beach. The house reef here is a favourite for snorkelling, so many travellers pair the two activities.
For a first-hand account of the Havelock experience, read our sea walk on Havelock Island travel story. As an Andaman-wide reference, this page covers both venues so you can pick the one that fits your itinerary.
Sea Walk Cost in Andaman & What's Included
A sea walk in Andaman costs from around INR 3,500 per person, with most operators charging between INR 3,500 and INR 4,000 depending on the venue, season and whether photos are included. The price is per person, not per couple, and is usually paid directly to the operator at the jetty.
A standard sea walk package typically includes:
- Use of the sea-walk helmet and all safety equipment
- A certified instructor and pre-dive briefing
- Boat transfer to the activity platform from the jetty
- Underwater photos and video, often a paid add-on rather than included (confirm when booking)
Prices change with season and operator. For the current ticket breakdown and add-on charges, see sea walk entry fees & cost.
Best Time, Timings & Duration
The best time for a sea walk in Andaman is October to May, when the sea is calm and underwater visibility is at its best. During the southwest monsoon (roughly June to September) rough water and poor visibility often force operators to suspend the activity, so it is not a reliable option in those months.
Sea walks run in batches from soon after sunrise through the early afternoon, with the last slots usually filling well before the day ends. You spend around 20 minutes underwater; allow 30–45 minutes in total for the briefing, fitting the helmet and the descent. Slots are limited per day and sell out fast in peak season.
For the latest slot windows at each venue, check the sea walk timings page before you travel.
Safety, Age Limits & Who Should Avoid It
Sea walking is one of the safest water activities in Andaman: you stay at a shallow 6–7 metres, an instructor is beside you the entire time, and you never have to swim or hold your breath. It is generally open to ages 9 to 60, though exact age limits vary by operator.
You should avoid a sea walk, or get a doctor's clearance first, if you:
- Have a heart condition or high blood pressure
- Have serious ear, sinus or respiratory problems
- Are pregnant
- Have recently had surgery or are unwell on the day
Wear contact lenses rather than glasses if you need vision correction, avoid a heavy meal just before, and follow the instructor's hand signals to equalise pressure as you descend. For more do's and don'ts, see our sea walk tips.
How to Book & Reach the Jetty
For North Bay Island, sea walks are booked at the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex in Port Blair, from where the boat departs; for Elephant Beach, you board from the Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) jetty. You can book on the spot, but during the October–May peak it is safer to reserve a slot in advance because daily capacity is limited.
Not sure how to get to the departure point? See how to reach the sea walk jetty. You can also fold a sea walk into a wider water-sports day with scuba diving or snorkelling at the same reefs. Planning a full trip? Start with our Andaman tourism guide.

FAQs of Andaman
Which island is best for a sea walk in the Andaman Islands: North Bay or Elephant Beach?
North Bay Island is the best choice for most travellers: it is only a 15-20 minute boat ride from Port Blair, has a shallow coral rich reef and can be combined with Cellular Jail and a glass bottom boat ride. Choose Elephant Beach near Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) if you are already staying on Havelock and want to pair the sea walk with snorkelling.
Do I need to know swimming to do a sea walk?
No. You do not need to know how to swim. You walk on the seabed wearing a helmet that supplies oxygen, an instructor stays with you the whole time, and you never go far from the boat. This is exactly why sea walking suits non-swimmers, children and older travellers.
What is the best time for sea walking in Andaman?
October to May is the best time, when the sea is calm and underwater visibility is clearest. During the monsoon months (about June to September) rough seas often force operators to suspend the activity, so it is not reliable then.
Is there an age limit for the sea walk?
Sea walks are generally open to people aged about 9 to 60 years, though the exact limits vary by operator. Children and seniors within this range can take part as long as they are in normal health and follow the instructor's guidance.
How deep do you go and how long does a sea walk last?
You walk at a depth of about 6-7 metres. You spend roughly 20 minutes underwater, with the full activity briefing, fitting the helmet and the descent taking around 30 to 45 minutes.
Is sea walking in Andaman safe? Who should avoid it?
Yes, it is considered very safe. The depths are shallow, a trained instructor stays beside you, and no swimming is required. You should avoid it, or seek a doctor's approval first, if you have heart problems, serious ear or respiratory conditions, or are pregnant.
How much does a sea walk in Andaman cost?
A sea walk costs from around ₹3,500 per person, typically ₹3,500 to ₹4,000 depending on the venue, season and whether photos are included. The price is per person and usually paid to the operator at the jetty; see the entry fees page for the current breakdown.
What is included, and do I get underwater photos?
A standard sea walk includes the helmet and safety gear, a certified instructor, the briefing and the boat transfer to the platform. Underwater photos and video are often available but are usually a paid add-on rather than included, so confirm this with your operator when booking.
