About Docklands in Melbourne
The Docklands of Melbourne is a prominent waterfront suburb in the inner-west part of the city, only 2 kilometers from the Central Business District (CBD) of Melbourne. What was earlier called the swamp west back in the 1880s became a popular dock area because of its proximity to Yarra River. There developed an extensive network of wharves, light industry, and railway construction. But today, it is part of an ongoing urban renewal project to make the area a complete tourist extravaganza and Docklands shopping center. The Docklands is already home to numerous shops, restaurants, bars, public parks, plazas, art galleries, pubs, hotels and some of Melbourne’s iconic landmarks – Docklands Stadium and the Star Observation Wheel.
Attractions:
The main Docklands attraction, the Melbourne Star is the Australian counterpart of the London Eye. The giant Ferris wheel facing Yarra River is one of the ten biggest in the world. At night, the wheel is illuminated with a bright display of lights along the circle and the star within. The most rewarding thing to do here is a walk along the promenade, watch people discover urban art sculpture installations, do window shopping and explore the bridges on Yarra – the Webb Bridge connecting Docklands and South Wharf and Jim Stynes Bridge. For the bookworms, Library at the Dock is a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a book with a lovely view of Yarra. Docklands shopping includes a whole range of places from factory outlets to open-air markets of Harbour Town and Sunday Market. Before the day ends, one can enjoy a spectacular sunset from the Central Pier and then head towards the many bars and restaurants to spend the night.
