About Great Ocean Road in Melbourne
Great Ocean Road is a 243 km long road along the southeastern coast of Australia. This road stretches between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Allansford. This road was built by returned soldiers in between 1919 and 1932; it was dedicated to soldiers who were killed in world war one. Great Ocean Road Melbourne is the world’s longest war memorial. It is a two-lane road, and it is covered by a speed limit changing between 50 km/hr and 100 km/hr. A 45 km section between Lorne and Apollo Bay is the location of annual “Great Ocean Road marathon.” In history, this road has served as a vital transport link for tourism and timber industry. Great Ocean Road’s construction was started in 1919 and was constructed by 3,000 returned servicemen. The soldiers were paid 10 shillings and sixpence for 8 hours per day. The construction lasted till 1922 and the section from the eastern view to Lorne was officially opened with celebrations.
