About Atomium in Brussels

The Atomium is one of the most marvelous pieces of sculpture or monument which was built in 1958 during the Export fair.

History of the Atomium

It was built in 1958 for the Expo 58 or the Brussels’s world fair in the year. It was designed by the famous engineer Andre Waterkeyn and is about 102 meters tall. The spheres are made of stainless steel and are each of 18-meter diameters. There are total 9 spheres representing the shape of a unit cell which is magnified 165 billion times. The place which was earlier used for exhibition is now a museum. The place was even ordered to be demolished but due to its instant hit, the demolition postponed and then further declined.

Originally constructed on the occasion of Expo 1958, the architecture of the Atomium is quite unique in its structure, making it the most significant attraction of the capital of Europe. Replicating a single unit of an iron crystal which has been magnified 165 billion times, this unusual icon still amazes everyone. Equipped with lifts and escalators, one can explore the interior of its five bubbled areas, and enjoy temporary exhibitions and the exhibition of 1958. People can also reach its top sphere, and cherish a panoramic view of the city of Brussels.
