This is guesthouse-plus territory: a clean air-conditioned room, a pool or a beach nearby, and breakfast on most rates. You find the most of it inland around Chiang Mai, Pai and Kanchanaburi, and on the quieter islands like Koh Lanta and Koh Tao. Rooms are simple and the wifi is honest rather than fast, but you are paying for the location, not the lobby. Book two or three nights and the per-night rate often drops again.

Rs 2,500 to 5,000 a night: the sweet spot

Most travellers land here. Expect a proper resort: a swimming pool, a restaurant, daily housekeeping and often a short walk to the sand. Rs 5,000 to 8,000 a night: budget with a view

The top of the budget range buys a beachfront position, a spa, and rooms that would cost three times as much in the Maldives. Still affordable by international standards, and worth the jump for a honeymoon or a milestone trip when you want the location without the five-star bill.
