Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai (2026): Tickets, Programs & How to Visit an Ethical Sanctuary

Enjoy a rendezvous with giant species, here!

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

Elephant Nature Park is an ethical elephant sanctuary about 60 km north of Chiang Mai, in the Mae Taeng valley, where rescued elephants roam free with no riding, no shows and no forced bathing. A single-day visit costs THB 2,500 (around Rs 5,450) and includes hotel pickup, lunch and an English-speaking guide.

Founded by Saengduean "Lek" Chailert through her Save Elephant Foundation, the park has rescued more than 200 elephants since the 1990s. Today around 100 of them live in the valley alongside hundreds of rescued dogs, cats, buffalo and birds. You come to watch them simply be elephants: grazing, throwing dust over their backs, ambling down to the river on their own terms. This guide covers 2026 ticket prices in baht and rupees, the difference between the half-day, full-day and overnight programs, how to get there, and how to fold a visit into a Chiang Mai trip from India.

What is Elephant Nature Park?

Elephant Nature Park (ENP) is a rescue and rehabilitation centre for elephants, opened in the 1990s and run today by the Save Elephant Foundation. Its animals come from logging camps, trekking outfits and the circus, and many arrive injured, blind or elderly. The park does not put them back to work. Instead it gives them a 250-acre valley to live out their lives, and lets visitors watch from a respectful distance.

That is the whole point of the place. There is no riding, no painting shows and no performances. The park also runs on a simple duty-of-care promise: every visitor, volunteer and mahout is covered by the park's insurance, and no one is ever pushed into an activity they are not comfortable with. If you want to get close to elephants in Thailand without funding the industry that breaks them, this is the sanctuary most travellers and welfare groups point to first.

Ticket prices and cost in 2026

A standard single-day visit is THB 2,500 for adults and THB 1,250 for children, which works out to roughly Rs 5,450 and Rs 2,725 at current rates. An overnight stay is THB 5,800 for adults and THB 2,900 for children. Those prices are not just a gate fee. Each one bundles the round-trip minivan from your Chiang Mai hotel, lunch at the park, a guide and insurance cover, so there is little to pay once you are there.

Half-day and specialty programs at ENP's affiliated Save Elephant Foundation projects start a little lower and run right up to week-long volunteer stays. For the full 2026 price list by program, including the child and specialty rates, see our Elephant Nature Park entry fees page.

Program Adult Child (2-11) Approx INR
Single-day visit THB 2,500 THB 1,250 Rs 5,450 / Rs 2,725
Overnight (2 days, 1 night) THB 5,800 THB 2,900 Rs 12,650 / Rs 6,325
Half-day / specialty (Elephant Highlands, Karen day, Care for Elephants) from ~THB 2,700 varies confirm current rate

Programs: half-day, full day and overnight

Most first-time visitors book the single-day visit. It gives you the fullest slice of park life without an overnight commitment, and it is the option families tend to choose. If your Chiang Mai schedule is tight, a half-day works. If you want the valley after the day-trippers leave, stay the night.

Program Duration Best for What you actually do
Single-day visit Full day, about 9am to 3:30pm First-timers, families Feed the herd, walk with the elephants at a distance, watch them bathe themselves in the river, lunch on the platform
Half-day (AM or PM) About 4 hours Short on time Feeding and observation, less travel-heavy
Overnight 2 days, 1 night A deeper, quieter visit The full day visit plus an evening with the herd, a basic lodge stay and sunrise observation
Specialty / weekly 1 day to 1 week Volunteers, repeat visitors Hands-on care work at affiliated Save Elephant Foundation projects

The ethical model: no riding, no forced bathing, what you actually do

This is where Elephant Nature Park parts ways with most elephant camps in Thailand, and it is worth understanding before you book anywhere. You will not ride an elephant here, you will not watch one paint or play football, and, since the park moved to an observation model, you will not scrub one down in the river either. Several other Chiang Mai sanctuaries still sell tourist bathing. ENP deliberately stopped, because forcing an elephant into the water on cue for photos is the same control the park exists to undo.

So what do you do all day? You prepare and hand over baskets of fruit at feeding time, you walk alongside the herd across the valley while your guide reads their behaviour, and you watch them do elephant things on their own schedule: dust baths, mud wallows, mothers steering calves, old friends leaning on each other. A guide certified by the Tourism Authority of Thailand stays with your group throughout and speaks fluent English. It is slower than a typical tour, and that is the point.

How to reach Elephant Nature Park from Chiang Mai (and from India)

The park sits about 60 km north of Chiang Mai in Mae Taeng, roughly a 90-minute drive. You do not need to arrange your own transport, and honestly you should not try to. Every standard booking includes a morning minivan pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel and a drop-off in the afternoon, which is why the road in is part of the ticket rather than an add-on. For pickup zones and timings, see our how to reach guide.

Coming from India, fly into Chiang Mai (most metros route via Bangkok), then a sanctuary day drops neatly into a two to three day Chiang Mai leg. If you would rather not juggle the flights, transfers and the advance booking yourself, our Thailand tour packages and Chiang Mai guide can build the visit in and hold the sanctuary slot for you.

Best time to visit and what to pack

November to February is the sweet spot: cool, dry and comfortable for a full day outdoors. March to May turns hot and hazy, and June to October is the green season, when the valley is at its most lush but afternoon rain is likely. The elephants are there year-round, so it comes down to weather. For opening hours and daily slots, check the timings page, and our visitor tips for the small stuff that makes the day smoother.

Pack closed shoes you do not mind getting muddy, light quick-dry clothes, a hat and sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle. Add a light rain poncho and insect repellent in the green season. Bring a little cash for the shop and tips, and a camera with a zoom, since you stay back from the animals rather than crowding them.

Elephant Nature Park vs other Chiang Mai sanctuaries

Chiang Mai has dozens of elephant camps and only a handful that are genuinely hands-off. If the no-touch ethic matters most to you, ENP and Changchill sit at the strict end. The others let you get closer, including bathing, so choose by how much contact you actually want.

Sanctuary Model Riding? Bathing? In short
Elephant Nature Park Free-roaming rescue, observation No No forced bathing (2026) The original and largest herd, strictest no-contact ethic
Changchill Hands-off observation No No Small and ethical, similar philosophy to ENP
Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Interaction-based No Yes (mud and river) Popular and more hands-on
Kanta Elephant Sanctuary Small-group interaction No Yes Half-day feeding and bathing
Elephant Rescue Park Interaction No Yes Feeding and bathing programs

Whichever you pick, confirm the operator's current policy when you book. Some camps have quietly changed their model, in both directions, over the past year.

What our team checked

One practical tip from the ground: book the earlier date, not the later one. "Single-day slots in the cool season sell out one to two weeks ahead, and the park caps daily numbers on purpose, so travellers who wait until they land usually miss the day they wanted," says our Chiang Mai trip desk.

Our Thailand team cross-checks the 2026 ticket prices and the no-riding, no-forced-bathing policy on this page against elephantnaturepark.org before each update, because several rival guides still list bathing that the park no longer offers.

Planning your visit

Elephant Nature Park is the rare big-name attraction that lives up to its billing: rescued elephants, a genuine no-riding, no-bathing ethic, and a day that feels calmer and more honest than the camps down the road. Book a week or two ahead, come in the cool season if you can, and let the herd set the pace. When you are ready to slot it into a wider trip, browse our Thailand tour packages and shape a Chiang Mai leg around the sanctuary.

    Chiang Mai Travel FAQs

How much does Elephant Nature Park cost in 2026?

A single-day visit is THB 2,500 for adults and THB 1,250 for children, about Rs 5,450 and Rs 2,725. An overnight stay is THB 5,800 for adults and THB 2,900 for children. Every rate includes round-trip hotel pickup in Chiang Mai, lunch, an English-speaking guide and insurance cover. Half-day and specialty programs start a little lower, so confirm the current rate when you book.

Can you ride the elephants at Elephant Nature Park?

No. Riding is not allowed and never has been. The park exists so rescued elephants can live without carrying tourists, performing tricks or being chained. You feed and watch them instead, which is the whole reason the sanctuary was set up.

Can you bathe the elephants there?

Not any more. Elephant Nature Park moved to an observation model, so in 2026 you watch the elephants bathe themselves in the river rather than scrubbing them down. Several other Chiang Mai sanctuaries still offer tourist bathing, but ENP deliberately does not, because forcing an elephant into the water on cue is exactly the kind of control it works to end.

How far is Elephant Nature Park from Chiang Mai?

About 60 km north, in the Mae Taeng valley, which is roughly a 90-minute drive. You do not arrange your own transport. The ticket includes a morning minivan pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel and a drop-off in the afternoon.

    Half-day or full-day, which should I book?

The full single-day visit suits most first-timers: more time with the herd, lunch on the platform and less rushing. Choose a half-day only if your schedule is tight, and the overnight if you want a quieter evening with the elephants after the day groups leave.

How many elephants are at the park?

More than 100 rescued elephants live at the park, many saved from logging, trekking camps or the circus. They share the valley with hundreds of rescued dogs, cats, buffalo and birds, so it is really a whole-animal sanctuary rather than an elephant-only one.

Is Elephant Nature Park good for kids and families?

Yes. Children pay a reduced rate, the pace is gentle, and the no-riding, no-bathing model keeps a safe distance between visitors and the animals. The single-day visit works better for families than the overnight.

How do I visit from India, and is it part of a Chiang Mai package?

Fly into Chiang Mai, usually via Bangkok from Indian metros, then a sanctuary day slots into a two to three day Chiang Mai leg. Most TravelTriangle Thailand and Chiang Mai packages can build the visit in, with the transfer and advance booking handled for you.

    Is hotel pickup included?

Yes. All standard visits include round-trip transfer by minivan from central Chiang Mai hotels, along with lunch, a guide and insurance. Because daily numbers are capped, book one to three weeks ahead, especially from November to February.
