About Wat Phra Singh In Chiang Mai

Nestled at the western end of Ratchadamnoen Road, Wat Phra Singh is one of the most venerated temples in Chiang Mai. With its astonishing gilded architecture, immaculately shaped grounds, Lanna-style rooftops which are layered like feathers, this temple is a sight to behold. Erected inside the old city walls, the temple houses one of the revered images of Buddha, called Phra Singh, which draws a huge flock of visitors all year round. The temple is one of the prominent attractions during the month of April when the city celebrates the Thai New Year Festival (Songkran).

History of Wat Phra Singh

Constructed in the year 1345, Wat Phra Singh Temple went into renovation in the 19th century. It is believed that the revered Buddha idol, housed in one of its chapels, came to Thailand from Sri Lanka in the year 1367. Hence, as you try to dig into the history of Wat Phra Singh, you might find that this image of Buddha has a lot of similarities with the images of Thailand in comparison to the other statues of Buddha in Sri Lanka. Interestingly, in addition to that, you can find two identical images of Buddha in the other corner of Thailand, one in Bangkok, while another one in Nakhon Si Thammarat. However, this fact doesn’t fade out its prominence, and the statue still manages to become a focal point during the Songkran Festival.

Attractions of Wat Phra Singh

The venerated temple of Wat Phra Singh, Chiang Mai has an amazingly crafted chedi (pagoda) which is often wrapped in orange clothes. Rising over the Lanna-style octagonal base, the pagoda was constructed in the year 1345. Besides that, as you wander around the ancient temple to unveil the mystery attached to it, its library decked in Wat Jet Yot style and snuggled in a stucco pavilion just leaves you mesmerized.

In addition to that, the Lai Kam Viharn is another highlight of the temple. Featuring lavish wood carvings, wing-shaped roofs, and numerous stuccos, the assembly hall is the best example of Lanna-style architecture. While the wall murals concocting numerous folklore tales are meant to beguile you to extend the tour for a longer duration.

With so much to explore, and a chance to savor its rich glimpses, the attraction of Wat Phra Singh, Chiang Mai, Thailand cannot be given a miss on your next tour.
