About Wat Chedi Luang In Chiang Mai

Home to the largest Buddhist chedi in the city of Chiang Mai, Wat Chedi Luang is one of the most noteworthy temples of the region.

Also referred to as ‘The temple of the Great Stupa’, it used to comprise two more temples- Wat Sukmin and Wat Ho Tham, making it one of the largest temples. And hence, the sprawling site derived its name from the northern dialect term- ‘Luang’ which means ‘large’. The most prominent feature of this attraction is its pagoda (chedi), which dominates the whole area. Tucked in between numerous temples and popular eateries, this religious site is worthy to visit on your Chiang Mai city tour.

History of Wat Chedi Luang

Constructed in between the 14th and 15th century, the history of Wat Chedi Luang makes it a popular attraction to visit for all the history buffs like you. With the pinnacle of the pagoda rose around 85 meters in the air, it became one of the largest temples of the region. However, a massive earthquake in the year 1545 destroyed the chedi, which now measures around 60 meters in height. Once housing the Emerald Buddha, which was later moved to Wat Phra Kaew, the temple now has a jade replica that was gifted by the Thai king in the year 1995.

Post the earthquake, Wat Chedi Luang Temple went under restoration by the Japanese Government and UNESCO. Though, the chedi couldn’t be reconstructed because of the lack of idea about its original structure, but the site has been guarded to prevent any further damage.

Attractions of Wat Chedi Luang

Built in Lanna-style architecture, one of the best features of Wat Chedi Luang, Chiang Mai is its dominant chedi (pagoda), which makes it quite picture-worthy. However, as you explore the sprawling temple, you might find a few of other attractions that may leave you in awe till the entirety of the trip.

Comprising the city pillar, also referred to as Sao Inthakin, marks the centre of the universe; main viharn that houses the prominent standing Buddha statue; and the giant gum trees that are believed to be protecting the city from the evils; and a few other temples, this temple is much more than a religious attraction. Apart from that, the site becomes a huge attraction during the Buddhist holidays, as all the devotees sumon here to offer their prayers and perform the evening candle procession.
