History of London

The city of London has an ancient origin, as it dates back all the way to the Roman times when it was the capital of the province of Britannia. After the collapse of Roman rule and a couple of centuries later, the city was attacked and ruled by the Vikings in the early medieval period. The Duke of Normandy won the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and over the next few years, the Tower of London was constructed. In 1666, the Great Fire of London destroyed several areas of the city. It was the world’s largest city during the Industrial Age from 1831 to 1925.

Language in London

English is the official and lingua franca of the city of London. A lot of foreign languages such as French, German, Italian, and Hindi are also spoken by a majority of city residents coming from Commonwealth countries.
