Ride the Kalka-Shimla toy train

The UNESCO-listed narrow-gauge line climbs about 96 km from Kalka to Shimla through 100-plus tunnels and over the arched Kanoh viaduct. Kids press against the windows the whole way, and it is the one leg of the trip nobody complains about. Book the reserved-chair-car seats ahead in summer, they sell out.

Play in the snow at Kufri

Kufri, about 16 km from town, is the family headquarters. There are pony and yak rides, the Himalayan Nature Park with Himalayan monals and other high-altitude animals, and the Fun World amusement rides that keep smaller children busy. From late December to February the slopes hold snow, and this is where most families see their first snowfall together.

Go ice skating in winter

Shimla runs one of India's oldest natural open-air ice rinks near the Ridge through the winter season. Older kids take to it fast, and even a wobbly first attempt makes the trip's best photos. Sessions run morning and evening in the coldest months.

Walk Mall Road and The Ridge

The pedestrian stretch of Mall Road and the open Ridge above it is the easy heart of a family evening: no traffic, benches, ice cream, the toy-shop windows of Lakkar Bazaar, and Christ Church lit up at dusk. Grandparents can sit while the kids run. Come back after dark, it is safe and lively.

Take the Jakhoo Hill ropeway

Jakhoo is the city's highest point at about 2,455 m, topped by a 33-metre Hanuman statue you can see from Mall Road. The short ropeway means elders and small children skip the steep 30-minute climb and still get the view. Hold on to snacks, the resident monkeys are quick.

Chase a waterfall day trip

Chadwick Falls, about 7 km out through the Glen forest, drops around 100 m and makes an easy half-day with a picnic. It is part of most family packages and is at its fullest just after the monsoon. Naldehra's nine-hole golf lawns nearby give younger kids room to simply run.

The wide open space where Mall Road meets the Ridge, with Christ Church at one end and long valley views. It is the natural meeting point for a family, flat and traffic-free, with room for kids to move.

Jakhoo Hill

About 3.3 km from the centre · 6 am to 11 pm · ropeway available

The highest point in the city, crowned by the colourful Jakhoo Temple and a towering Hanuman statue. The ropeway saves elders and toddlers the climb. Peaceful, green and full of (cheeky) monkeys.

Naldehra and Shaily Peak

About 24 km from Shimla · sunrise to sunset · day trip

A quiet town wrapped around a nine-hole golf course, with pony and horse rides and easy picnic spots. Shaily Peak, roughly 23 km further, rewards a short family hike with a wide Himalayan view.

Chadwick Falls

A 100-metre fall tucked in thick deodar and pine forest, best just after the monsoon and loveliest at sunrise. An easy, uncrowded outing that lands in most family packages.

How to Reach Shimla

Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, connects by air, rail and road. With a family, the smoothest plan is usually a flight to Chandigarh and a pre-arranged cab, or the toy train for the fun of it. Every package includes transfers, so you are met and driven, not left to sort logistics with tired kids.

By air

The nearest airport is Chandigarh, about 113 km away, with the widest flight choice. From there it is a scenic 3.5 to 4 hour drive. Shimla's own Jubbarhatti airport, about 22 km from town, takes limited flights and is best confirmed close to travel.

By train

The famous route is the Kalka-Shimla toy train: board the Kalka Shatabdi from New Delhi to Kalka, then the narrow-gauge line climbs about 96 km to Shimla in roughly 5 to 6 hours. Slow, gorgeous and a highlight for children. Reserve the toy-train seats well ahead in peak season.

By road

From Delhi it is about 350 km via the Chandigarh-Shimla highway, roughly 7 to 8 hours by cab. Self-drive is fine, but a package cab lets parents watch the valleys instead of the hairpins.
