Abbey Falls (Coorg)
The Abbey Falls in Coorg is settled in lush greenery and the falls are around 6 kilometers away from the main town of Coorg. Abbey Falls, a mesmerizing waterfall located about 7 kilometers away from the town of Madikeri is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Coorg. The water cascade coming down the cliff from a height of 70 feet provides a spectacular scene to gaze upon.
The Abbey falls in Coorg is surrounded by lush greenery typical to the sceneries of Western Ghats, and attracts thousands of tourists throughout the year - especially nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and photographers. There is an over-bridge that hangs opposite to the falls, from where the most picturesque scene of the roaring white waters gushing down the ridge can be seen and remembered.
Some small mountain streamlets and creeks join together to form one of the most charming waterfalls of Southern India, the Abbey falls in Madikeri and the water flows to join the Kaveri river as one of its tributaries. The walk to the Abbey falls from main entrance takes the travelers through exotic coffee, cardamom, pepper and other spice plantations which is common in southern India. It is a fantastic opportunity for photographers to capture the real beauty and elegance of the natural world and also for getting away from the hustle-bustle of city life. Even though bathing is prohibited in the falls now, the elegance of the place itself is quite enough to draw a number of tourists every day.
History of Abbey Falls
The history of Abbey Falls is also very interesting. The first British Chaplain of Coorg named this place Jessy Falls, after his daughter’s name. After the British left, it came under the Government of India but the place surrounding the Abbey falls in Coorg was covered in the wilderness. But then Mr. Neravanda B. Nanaiah purchased the land from the Government and set up different spice plantations around the place. As the forests were cleared up, the natural beauty of the place, alluring streams and waterfalls were exposed to the people. The area has been private property since but it has not proved to be an issue to the tourists.
Since the beauty of Abbey Falls is at its peak during the monsoon season, it is the best time to experience its beauty. So, July to October is the best time to plan a trip to Abbey Falls in Madikeri. But travelers who want to avoid the monsoon rains can plan their trip at any time of the year.
