History of Omkareshwara Temple

Nonetheless, Omkareshwara Temple in Madikeri has an interesting historical background as well. The temple was built in 1820 by the then King Lingarajendra II. It is believed that the King had killed an honorable Brahmin who was hostile to the King’s wrongdoing. Later, the spirit of the Brahmin started threatening the King in his nightmares and that is when he consulted all the wise men in his kingdom. They advised him to build a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva to attain his peace of mind. The Shivalinga was brought from the pious land of Kashi and this is how Sri Omkareshwara Temple in Coorg, Karnataka came into existence. Undoubtedly, Omkareshwara Temple is a must-see when in Coorg.

Why is Omkareshwara Temple Famous?

Unlike all the other Hindu temples in India, Omkareshwar Temple, Coorg does not possess a huge pillared hall and the idol of the deity in its center. However, there is a large central dome displaying resemblance to Islamic dargahs and mosques. And the Shivalinga is installed at the entrance of the door. Furthermore, there is a water tank in the temple premises. Sri Omkareshwara Temple attracts tourists because of this water tank as well. The tank is full of beautiful little fish and visitors love to photograph them.

Omkareshwara is considered as “NabhiSthal”, meaning the navel of Narmada River.

The Mandapa of the temple is made using 60 stone pillars. 

The temple is also known as Omkar Mandhata temple and is the devotion place of Ikshvaku King Mandhata who got the Shivalinga.

Before visiting the Omkareshwara Temple one must pay respect to Narmada River, which is one of the holiest rivers in India.

hotel location is not as expected, it was long away from the hill station, since we were new to the place and unaware of the location, the Traveller should have guided us with the locations (climate, ambience) etc, this was not happened, should improve, we have also had a choice to cancel the current booked hotel to a new hotel in hill station with additional cost cost too, eventhough, the Traveller did not helped, overall, with the help of driver, we went to the places to which he is well versed
