How to Reach Kashmir from Delhi: Distance, Road, Train & Flight (2026)

Which one suits you depends mostly on the month. In December to February the Ramban stretch of the highway can shut after snowfall, so flights and the train are safer bets. From March to November all four options work. Below are the distances, timings and 2026 fares for each, the road stages with overnight stops, and straight answers to the questions our Kashmir desk is asked most.

How to reach Kashmir from Delhi by flight

Flying is the quickest way from Delhi to Kashmir and the obvious pick for a 4 to 6 night trip, because it saves a day and a half each way. IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet fly nonstop from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to Srinagar, with a flying time of about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes and most departures between 6 am and early afternoon. Jammu also has direct flights from Delhi if you want to start with Vaishno Devi or Patnitop.

Which airport: Srinagar (SXR) or Jammu (IXJ)?

Srinagar International Airport (SXR) sits about 12 km south-west of central Srinagar, and Jammu airport (IXJ) lies about 8 km south of the city of Jammu. Taxi and car rentals are available at both airports. Fly into Srinagar if your trip is about the valley, meaning Dal Lake, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Fly into Jammu if you are starting with Vaishno Devi at Katra or a night in Patnitop, then continue to Srinagar by the Vande Bharat or by road.

Delhi to Srinagar flight fares and when to book

One-way fares usually sit between Rs 4,000 and 6,000 when you book three to four weeks ahead for April, September or October. In late May and June, over Christmas and New Year, and on long weekends, the same seat often costs Rs 8,000 to 10,000 or more. Winter flights can be delayed by fog in Delhi in late December and January or by snow at Srinagar, so pick a morning departure and keep a buffer day before any onward connection.

From Srinagar airport to Dal Lake and your hotel

The prepaid taxi counter is just outside arrivals, and the ride to Dal Lake or Lal Chowk takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. If you are staying on the water, most houseboats in Srinagar will send a shikara to meet you at the ghat. For the flight home, reach the airport 2.5 to 3 hours before departure because vehicles and bags are screened at the outer gate as well as inside the terminal. A digital copy of your ticket on your phone is fine. Also note that prepaid mobile connections bought outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work there, while postpaid connections do, so sort this out before you fly.

Delhi to Kashmir by train in 2026

Yes, you can now travel from Delhi to Srinagar entirely by train with one change, but there is still no direct Delhi to Srinagar train as of October 2026. A Vande Bharat sleeper on the route has been planned, and its launch date has moved more than once. The journey comes in two legs.

Leg 1: New Delhi to Katra or Jammu Tawi

There is no train to Srinagar from Delhi yet, so the first leg ends at Jammu Tawi (JAT) or Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK). These are the three trains most Delhi travellers use. If they are full, the Jhelum Express, the Malwa Express and the Jammu Mail also run daily between Delhi and Jammu.

Leg 2: the Vande Bharat to Srinagar

The 26401 Vande Bharat now starts at Jammu Tawi at 06:15, calls at Katra at 08:08 and reaches Srinagar at 11:10. It runs six days a week and does not run on Tuesdays. Chair Car fares from Katra are about Rs 715 to 880 and Executive Class about Rs 1,320 to 1,515. On the way it crosses the Chenab Bridge, which stands 359 m above the river and is the world's highest railway arch bridge, before running through Banihal, Qazigund and Anantnag and on past Pampore into Srinagar. The line continues to Baramulla.

The Rajdhani reaches Jammu Tawi at 05:00, which leaves a little over an hour to make the 06:15 Vande Bharat. That works most days, but if the Rajdhani runs late the connection gets tight, so many travellers prefer the daytime 22439 to Katra, a night there, and the Vande Bharat next morning. Book both legs on IRCTC as soon as your dates are fixed, because the Srinagar Vande Bharat sells out weeks ahead in April, May and June.

Delhi to Kashmir by road: distance, route and stages

The Delhi to Kashmir distance by road is about 810 to 850 km to Srinagar, all of it on NH44. The first 590 km to Jammu is flat, fast highway through Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Pathankot. The last 250 km from Jammu to Srinagar is mountain road, and it decides how long your trip takes. Pure driving time is 16 to 20 hours, so treat it as a two-day trip.

The two tunnels that changed this drive

The 9.2 km Chenani-Nashri tunnel, officially the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee tunnel, cuts out the climb over Kud, Patnitop and Batote. The 8.5 km Banihal-Qazigund tunnel then takes you under the Pir Panjal range and straight down into the Kashmir Valley. The old 2.85 km Jawahar Tunnel still exists, but traffic through it has dropped to a trickle. Between them, the two new tunnels have brought Jammu to Srinagar down to about 6 to 8 hours in normal conditions.

How to drive from Delhi to Srinagar in two days

1. Start early from Delhi. Leave Delhi by 5 am to clear the city and the Murthal and Karnal traffic before it builds up, and make sure your FASTag is recharged for the toll plazas on NH44.

2. Drive to Jammu on day one. Follow NH44 through Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Pathankot to Jammu, about 590 km and 10 to 11 hours with breaks.

3. Check the J&K Traffic Police advisory. In the evening at Jammu, check the next day's advisory for the Jammu to Srinagar highway, including one-way traffic timings and any closure near Ramban.

4. Leave Jammu at dawn on day two. Start by 6 or 7 am so you reach Ramban before the midday traffic and finish the mountain section in daylight.

5. Drive through the two tunnels. Pass through the 9.2 km Chenani-Nashri tunnel near Udhampur and the 8.5 km Banihal-Qazigund tunnel, which brings you down into the Kashmir Valley at Qazigund.

6. Continue via Anantnag and Pampore to Srinagar. From Qazigund, drive through Anantnag and the saffron fields of Pampore to Srinagar, about 250 km and 6 to 8 hours from Jammu.

Where to stop overnight: Jammu, Katra or Patnitop?

Jammu is the default, with the most hotels and a straight run to the hills at dawn. Katra, about 50 km from Jammu on a side road, is the right stop if you want Vaishno Devi darshan on the way. Patnitop is the scenic choice for a cool night in the pines, though the new tunnel bypasses it, so reaching it means leaving the main highway at Chenani. Do not try to push on past Jammu late in the day. The mountain section is far easier and safer in daylight.

Delhi to Srinagar cab fare and self-drive cost

Tolls on NH44 add roughly Rs 1,500 to 2,000 per car each way, and most operators charge a driver night allowance on top. Driving yourself, budget fuel for about 1,700 km for the round trip plus tolls. Many families take the train to Jammu and hire a J&K-registered taxi there instead. Outside cabs can drop you in Srinagar, but local taxi unions at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg usually require you to switch to a local cab for sightseeing, so factor that into a self-drive plan.

Worth a detour on the way

Murthal's dhabas are the classic breakfast stop an hour out of Delhi. Amritsar, about 80 km off the highway from Jalandhar, is worth an extra day for the Golden Temple and the Wagah border ceremony. Delhi to Kashmir by bus

The direct Delhi to Kashmir bus is a private AC sleeper that leaves Kashmere Gate ISBT for Srinagar's TRC Road every evening. It takes about 20 to 22 hours and costs roughly Rs 2,100 to 2,300. For more departures, take a government or private bus from Delhi to Jammu (11 to 13 hours) and continue on a JKSRTC bus or a shared taxi to Srinagar in 6 to 8 hours. Book a lower berth, carry snacks and water for the Ramban stretch, and in peak winter avoid any bus that plans to run the mountain section at night.

NH44 is an all-weather highway and stays open for most of the year, but two seasons cause trouble on the Ramban to Banihal stretch. Here is what to expect month by month.
