How to Reach Pahalgam from Delhi

The fastest way is to fly Delhi to Srinagar in about an hour and 20 minutes, then take a cab the final 90 km. The cheapest comfortable way is the train into the valley, which changed for the better in 2025 (more on that below). Here are all four options with distances, times and current fares.

Delhi to Pahalgam Distance at a Glance

Distance by road: about 800 km via NH44, roughly 16 to 17 hours of driving.

Aerial distance: about 624 km. It is shorter than the road figure because the highway bends through the mountains around Jammu and the Pir Panjal.

Fastest way: fly Delhi to Srinagar (SXR), about 1 h 20 m, then a cab for the last 90 km, about 2 to 2.5 hours.

Cheapest comfortable way: train into the Kashmir Valley, then a shared cab from Anantnag or Srinagar.

Nearest railway station: Anantnag, about 46 km from Pahalgam, on the USBRL Valley line that opened in 2025. Older guides still name Jammu Tawi (about 285 km away) as the railhead, which is no longer correct.

Nearest airport: Srinagar International (Sheikh ul-Alam), about 90 km from Pahalgam.

So why do you see different road numbers online? Distance apps measure slightly different routes and end points, which is why figures from 780 km to 856 km all appear. For planning, treat the Delhi to Pahalgam road distance as about 800 km and the driving time as 16 to 17 hours, before halts. All Ways to Reach Pahalgam from Delhi: Distance, Time & Cost

No single mode wins for everyone. This is how the four routes from Delhi compare on distance, total time and indicative 2026 cost. All of them finish with a road transfer into Pahalgam, so the last leg is the same scenic drive.

Fares are indicative and move with season, especially in peak summer and during the Amarnath Yatra. Book flights and trains early for the best rates.

Delhi to Pahalgam by Flight

Flying is the fastest route. There is no airport at Pahalgam, so you fly Delhi to Srinagar International (SXR) in about 1 hour 20 minutes, with several direct flights each day. The aerial distance is about 624 km. From the terminal, prepaid taxis from the official airport counter run to Pahalgam via Anantnag in roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, covering the last 90 km. App cabs cannot pick up at the terminal, so book the prepaid counter or a pre-arranged transfer.

A Srinagar or airport cab can drop you at your Pahalgam hotel, but local sightseeing to Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari has to be done in Pahalgam taxi union vehicles. Budget for that separately rather than keeping your Srinagar cab for the whole stay.

One-way fares from Delhi to Srinagar usually sit around Rs 4,500 to 9,000, higher in the May to August peak. Many travellers spend the first night on a Dal Lake houseboat in Srinagar, only about 15 km from the airport, then drive down to Pahalgam the next morning fresh. Add the airport cab and you land in Pahalgam the same day you leave Delhi.

Delhi to Pahalgam by Train

This is the route that changed most, and most articles still get it wrong. Pahalgam has no railway station. For years the advice was to take a train to Jammu Tawi (about 285 km away) or Udhampur (217 km) and then drive for the better part of a day. That is out of date.

With the Udhampur to Srinagar to Baramulla line (USBRL) fully open since June 2025, trains now run into the Kashmir Valley itself. The nearest railway station to Pahalgam is now Anantnag, about 46 km away, and the nearest through-station for long-distance trains is Srinagar (Nowgam, code SINA), about 90 km away. The Vande Bharat, which began running Katra to Srinagar in June 2025 and has started from Jammu Tawi since spring 2026, connects the valley to the national network. There is still no through train from Delhi into the valley as of October 2026.

Here is how the train journey from Delhi works step by step:

Step 1: Take a train from Delhi to Jammu Tawi or Katra. Options include the Uttar Sampark Kranti and Jammu Rajdhani, roughly a 9 to 13 hour run depending on the service.

Step 2: At Jammu or Katra, connect onto the Valley line. The Jammu/Katra to Srinagar Vande Bharat and other USBRL services carry you through the Pir Panjal tunnel into the valley.

Step 3: Get off at Anantnag if your service halts there, as it is the closest station to Pahalgam at about 46 km. The Railway Board approved an experimental Anantnag halt for the Jammu to Srinagar Vande Bharat (26401/26402) in September 2026, so check the current stop list on NTES or IRCTC when you book. Otherwise continue to Srinagar (Nowgam).

Step 4: From the station, take a taxi or shared cab to Pahalgam via Anantnag. From Anantnag it is about 46 km, 1 to 1.5 hours. From Srinagar it is about 90 km, 2 to 2.5 hours.

Step 5: Book the valley-line leg in advance in summer, as seats sell out fast during the Amarnath Yatra window.

Delhi to Pahalgam by Road, Bus & Self-Drive

The road distance from Delhi to Pahalgam is about 800 km via NH44, which takes 16 to 17 hours of driving before halts, so most people split it over two days with a night around Jammu. The highway runs Delhi, Ambala, Pathankot and Jammu, then through the Banihal to Qazigund road tunnel into the Kashmir Valley. At Khanabal near Anantnag you leave NH44 and turn east up the Lidder valley to Pahalgam, so you do not need to go via Srinagar at all.

During the Amarnath Yatra (roughly July to August), J&K Traffic Police set daily cut-off times for valley-bound vehicles on NH44 and the Anantnag to Pahalgam road, and late vehicles are held at checkpoints. Check the day's traffic advisory before you leave Jammu and start early.

By car or hired cab: a scenic but long drive. Break it near Jammu, and keep the mountain stretches to daylight. Winter snow and heavy rain slow the Banihal and Ramban stretch and the Lidder valley road.

By bus: there is no direct bus from Delhi to Pahalgam. Take a bus to Jammu or Srinagar (Rs 1,500 to 3,000), then a shared cab onward. From Anantnag the final leg to Pahalgam is about 46 km.

Self-drive tip: fuel up before the tunnel stretch and carry offline maps, as the network thins out in the upper Lidder valley.

Phone tip: prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu and Kashmir, including Delhi connections, do not work in J&K. Carry a postpaid connection or buy a local SIM on arrival so maps and cab bookings keep working.

Fastest vs Cheapest: The Verdict for Delhi Travellers

If your priority is time, fly. Delhi to Srinagar plus the cab to Pahalgam gets you there in about 6 to 8 hours door to door, and you lose no day to travel. If your priority is budget, take the train into the valley and a shared cab from Anantnag or Srinagar, which is comfortable and far cheaper than flying, though it costs you the better part of a day. Driving suits travellers who want the road trip itself and are happy to split it over two days.
