How to Reach Pahalgam from Srinagar

The fastest option is a private cab straight down NH-44, which gets you from Srinagar to Pahalgam in about two hours. The cheapest is a shared Sumo heading south from Pantha Chowk, changing vehicles at Anantnag (the old Batmaloo general bus stand moved to Parimpora in 2017, so ignore guides that still send you there). If you want the train, the point most guides miss is that the valley line has linked Srinagar (Nowgam) and Anantnag, the closest railhead to Pahalgam, since 2008, so from Srinagar you never need to go anywhere near Udhampur.

Srinagar to Pahalgam by Train

There is no direct train to Pahalgam, because Pahalgam has no railway station of its own. The nearest railhead is Anantnag, about 46 km away, and this is exactly where 2026 changes the old advice.

Kashmir's valley line, the Banihal to Baramulla stretch of the Udhampur to Srinagar to Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), is now joined to the national network. A Vande Bharat has run between Katra and Srinagar since June 2025, and in April 2026 the service was extended toward Jammu Tawi. In plain terms, you can finally reach the valley by rail instead of the 220 km road detour to Udhampur that most older guides still quote.

For the local leg, board a valley-line passenger train at Nowgam (Srinagar's SINA station) and ride south to Anantnag. The unreserved run takes about an hour and costs very little, roughly Rs 20 on the passenger service. From Anantnag it is about 46 km on to Pahalgam by cab or bus, another hour to an hour and a half. Srinagar to Pahalgam by Road (Private Cab and Self-Drive)

Driving is how most people reach Pahalgam, and it is the simplest. The road distance is about 90 km, closer to 95 km by the common route, and the drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic through Pampore and Awantipora. You follow NH-44 south to Anantnag, then turn onto the Anantnag to Pahalgam road (part of NH-501). A private cab one way costs around Rs 2,500, and a return with an overnight halt runs closer to Rs 4,500. Self-drive rentals are available in Srinagar if you would rather keep the car to yourself, though a local driver who knows the mountain stretch is worth it in winter.

For the cheapest comfortable ride, shared Sumo jeeps and taxis leave from stands in Srinagar and run to Anantnag, where you change for a second shared vehicle to Pahalgam. Expect roughly Rs 150 to Rs 200 per seat on each leg. These fill up and go rather than follow a timetable, so mornings are your best bet before seats run out. For most of the year there is no dependable direct government bus from Srinagar to Pahalgam; JKSRTC adds seasonal direct runs from the TRC in summer, but they are not daily all year. The workable route is a bus from Srinagar (Pantha Chowk or the TRC/Dalgate area) to Anantnag, then a local bus or shared taxi for the final 46 km. Budget around Rs 120 to Rs 150 in total and about 3 to 4 hours end to end. It is slower than a cab, but it is the lightest on the wallet if you are not racing the clock.

Srinagar to Pahalgam by Air

Pahalgam has no airport. If you are flying into Kashmir, you land at Srinagar International Airport (Sheikh ul-Alam, code SXR), about 90 km from Pahalgam, and continue by road. A prepaid taxi from the airport takes 2.5 to 3 hours. This really only matters if you are arriving from outside the valley. If you are already in Srinagar city, the road or the valley train is all you need.

Pahalgam is a year-round drive from Srinagar, but the trip changes with the season. April to June brings green meadows and mild days, the easiest window for first-timers. July and August can see spells of rain that slow the road, so leave early. • Carry a photo ID. There are checkposts on the route, and you may be asked to show it.

• Fuel up in Srinagar or Anantnag. Pumps thin out beyond Anantnag. Mobile data works in Pahalgam town, but prepaid SIMs issued outside J&K do not work in the region, so carry a postpaid connection.

• Plan on switching cabs for sightseeing. A Srinagar cab can drop you in Pahalgam town, but Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari are served by permit-holding Pahalgam taxi-stand vehicles, so you hire a local union taxi there for those trips.
