15 Places to Visit in Pahalgam and What's Open in 2026

The best places to visit in Pahalgam right now are Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, the Lidder River, Mamleshwar Temple, Pahalgam Golf Course and Lidder Amusement Park, all open to tourists in October 2026. Three famous spots are not. Baisaran, Chandanwari and Tulian Lake are on the Anantnag district closed list until at least 31 December 2026, and every trekking route in Kashmir has been shut since July 2026. Sheshnag Lake and the Amarnath Cave open only for the Yatra each summer. Two days covers everything you can actually reach.

Pahalgam sits at about 2,200 m where the East and West Lidder rivers meet, roughly 90 km (2 to 2.5 hours) from Srinagar. The town itself is small, with a temple, a golf course, a riverside amusement park and the market all within about 1 km of the bus stand. The big valleys lie 7 to 16 km up the two river roads. Visitors are back in numbers. Kashmir Life, citing official data, counted 9,93,596 tourists in Pahalgam between April 2025 and April 2026. What's open in Pahalgam right now (October 2026)?

Of Pahalgam's 15 main sights, 8 are open, 2 open only during the Amarnath Yatra and 5 are closed. The closures come from two official sources. One is the Anantnag district order "Details of closed Tourist Destinations as on 07-07-2026", valid until 31 December 2026. The other is the Director of Tourism Kashmir's July 2026 statement that all trekking routes stay closed until further orders.

Orders in Kashmir change at short notice. Ask your hotel or the Pahalgam taxi stand the evening before, because they hear about a reopening first.

Valleys and meadows you can visit now

1. Betaab Valley

Betaab Valley in Pahalgam is the one place almost every visitor goes, and in 2026 it is the easiest to reach. It lies 7 to 8 km northeast of town, a 20 to 30 minute taxi ride up the East Lidder road towards Chandanwari. The valley was earlier known as Hagan Valley and took its present name from the 1983 Hindi film Betaab, which was shot here. The floor sits at about 2,390 m, with pine and deodar on the slopes and the Lidder running clear and fast through the middle. Wooden footbridges cross the river, and the lawns are fenced and kept, so it works well for children and older travellers.

The gate is open roughly 7 am to 7 pm every day. Entry is Rs 100 for adults and the counter takes cash only. Child rates and other charges are on our Betaab Valley entry fee page. An SUV return trip to Betaab alone from the Pahalgam stand costs about Rs 1,600. Between December and February the meadow is under snow and the river freezes at the edges, and with Chandanwari shut, Betaab is Pahalgam's best snow view this winter. 2. Aru Valley

Aru Valley lies about 12 km from Pahalgam on the West Lidder road, and it feels nothing like Betaab. Where Betaab is a fenced park, Aru is a working village of log houses set on an open meadow, with Gujjar and Bakarwal herders bringing flocks up through summer. Travellers come here to walk the meadow, take a pony ride and sit by the stream. It was also the base for the Lidderwat, Kolahoi and Tarsar treks, which are closed this season.

Aru sits a little higher than Pahalgam, at about 2,400 m. The road follows the West Lidder past the edge of the Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary, so keep an eye out for birds of prey along the way. The meadow is green from May and turns gold in late September. Snow can block the Aru road after heavy falls between December and February. 3. Lidder River

The Lidder is the reason Pahalgam exists. Its two branches meet just above town, and the riverfront path between the market and Laripora is the best free walk in Pahalgam. Between April and July, when the river runs high with snowmelt, operators run rafting on the Lidder on the stretch around Yanner below town, with life jackets and a guide included. Trout fishing on marked stretches near town needs a licence from the J&K Fisheries Department. Below Pahalgam the river runs about 40 km south-west through Anantnag district before joining the Jhelum at Khanabal.

4. Lidder Amusement Park

Lidder Amusement Park is the riverside park in town where Pahalgam families bring their children. Small rides keep younger kids busy, and there are bumper cars and paddle boats for everyone else. It sits on the riverbank in town, so it pairs easily with the Lidder walk. A few eateries nearby serve Kashmiri dishes and familiar snacks, which makes it a regular picnic stop for local families. Allow one to two hours. Tickets are sold at the gate.

5. Pahalgam Golf Course

Pahalgam Golf Course is an 18-hole course on the edge of town with the river on one side and pine slopes on the other. It is one of the highest courses in India, and the season runs from late spring to autumn. Even if you do not play, the walk along its edge gives clean views of the valley. Golfers can hire clubs and pay the green fee at the clubhouse. Book a tee time a day ahead in May and June.

6. Mamleshwar Temple

Mamleshwar (Mamal) Temple is a small stone Shiva temple in Mamal village, about 1 km from the bus stand across the Lidder. It is usually dated to the 12th century, which makes it one of the oldest standing structures in the valley. A spring-fed tank sits in front of the shrine. Fields and village houses surround it, and half an hour here is a quiet break from the market. Walk over in the early morning before the tour groups arrive.

7. Pahalgam Main Market

The main market runs along the road above the river and is where the taxi stand, most eateries and the shops are. It is the place to buy walnut-wood boxes, papier-mâché, pashmina shawls and packets of kahwa. Bargaining is normal, and for pashmina ask whether the shawl carries the GI label. The market stays open through winter, though many shops shorten their hours.

8. Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary

The Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary covers the forested slopes between Pahalgam and Aru and is home to Himalayan black bear, musk deer and a long list of Himalayan birds. In 2026 most visitors see it only from the Aru road, because its interior trails fall under the closure of all trekking routes. Early morning on the Aru drive is the best chance of spotting birds.

Lakes, glaciers and treks near Pahalgam

These are the high places most lists show as easy outings. They are not. Each one needs a multi-day trek, and in 2026 the only legal way to reach any of them was the Amarnath Yatra.

9. Sheshnag Lake

Hindu pilgrims treat Sheshnag Lake as sacred, named for Sheshnag, the serpent king said to live in its water. It sits at about 3,590 m below glaciers on the Amarnath route, roughly 12 km on foot beyond Chandanwari via Pissu Top. It is not a family picnic spot. You can reach it only during the Amarnath Yatra window, with a registered Yatra permit, a health certificate and an RFID card.

10. Amarnath Cave

The Amarnath cave shrine, dedicated to Lord Shiva, sits at about 3,888 m (12,756 ft). Pilgrims can reach it only during the annual Amarnath Yatra, which falls around the Hindu month of Shravan and starts from Pahalgam on the traditional route. The 2026 Yatra ran for 57 days, from 3 July to 28 August. Registration with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board cost Rs 150 per yatri, and every pilgrim needed a compulsory health certificate and an RFID card. 11. Kolahoi Glacier

Kolahoi is the glacier that feeds the West Lidder, and the trek from Aru via the Lidderwat meadow is the classic Pahalgam hike, usually done in 3 to 4 days between July and September. In July 2026 the Director of Tourism Kashmir said all trekking routes would stay closed until further orders, so this trek is off for now. 12. Tarsar and Marsar Lakes

Tarsar and Marsar are twin alpine lakes on the ridge between the Lidder and Sindh valleys, reached in 5 to 7 days from Aru. Tarsar is the one with the almond-shaped turquoise basin that appears in most photos. Like Kolahoi, the trek is closed under the July 2026 order.

Every top-ranked list still shows these three as normal stops. They are not open, and a taxi driver cannot take you in. We keep them on the page so you know what to skip and why.

13. Chandanwari

Chandanwari sits at about 2,895 metres (roughly 9,500 feet) above sea level, 16 km from the centre of Pahalgam and about a 30-minute drive up the Lidder valley. It is the official starting point of the Amarnath Yatra and a snow point that holds a snow bridge into early summer. In normal years it is a base for sledging and pony rides. In 2026 it is closed to tourists until at least 31 December under the Anantnag district order of 7 July 2026, and only Yatra traffic used the road in July and August. 14. Baisaran Meadow

Baisaran is the pine-ringed meadow about 5 km uphill from town, reached by pony or on foot, and often called "Mini Switzerland". It has been closed since the April 2025 attack, and it stays on the Anantnag closed list until at least 31 December 2026. More background is in our Baisaran Valley guide.

15. Tulian Lake

Tulian Lake is a turquoise glacial lake at about 3,684 metres, roughly 16 km from Pahalgam, which often has chunks of ice floating in it into summer. The trail starts from Baisaran, so with Baisaran shut the lake is also on the closed list until at least 31 December 2026.

Places on the way from Srinagar and near Pahalgam

The drive from Srinagar passes some of Kashmir's oldest monuments, and they turn a transfer into a half day of sightseeing. Distances are approximate road figures from Pahalgam.

Martand and Avantipur charge a small ASI entry ticket. Time the Pampore stop for late October to mid-November, when the saffron crocus flowers for about three weeks.

Not near Pahalgam: Lolab Valley

Lolab Valley is often listed as a Pahalgam place, including on older versions of this page. It is not. Lolab lies in Kupwara district in the far north-west of the Kashmir Valley, several hours by road from Pahalgam through Srinagar, so it is not a day trip. How many days do you need for Pahalgam sightseeing?

Two days covers every place that is open in 2026. Here is how the open sights split across one, two and three days.

Getting around: union taxis, ponies and walking

Only the town sights are walkable. The Lidder riverfront, Mamleshwar, the golf course, the amusement park and the market are all within about 1 km of the bus stand. Betaab and Aru need a Pahalgam union taxi.

Your Srinagar cab cannot take you there. A J&K High Court order of 3 June 2024 bars taxis from running routes their permit does not cover inside the Pahalgam Development Authority area. In practice the Aru and Betaab routes are worked by the two Pahalgam taxi stands, and outside cabs and rental cars park in town. Each stand posts a fixed rate card. Operator quotes for the Aru and Betaab circuit in 2026 run about Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,800 in an Eeco and Rs 3,200 to Rs 4,000 in an Innova, per vehicle, while an SUV return to Betaab alone is about Rs 1,600. The card at the stand is the final word.

Ponies work the meadows from registered handlers at fixed route rates. Agree the route and the waiting time before you get on, and ask to see the handler's registration card.

Pahalgam for families, couples and older travellers

Families do best at Betaab, the Lidder Amusement Park and the riverfront, all with flat paths, toilets and food close by. Our travellers back this up. Couples tend to prefer Aru in the late afternoon, the Mamleshwar walk at dawn and a riverside stay at Laripora. Pahalgam honeymoon packages usually pair two nights here with Gulmarg and a Srinagar houseboat.

Older travellers should stick to Betaab, the golf course edge and the town. Pahalgam's 2,200 m altitude is gentle, but Yatra treks and pony climbs are not.
