How to Reach Srinagar from Chandigarh by Train, Road, Bus and Flight (2026)

Until 2025 every route from Chandigarh ended with a long cab or bus ride from Jammu. Then the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link opened and put the valley on the national rail map, so the cheapest way in is now also the most scenic. Below are the 2026 train numbers and fares, the road stages, the direct sleeper bus and the nonstop flight, all checked by our Kashmir desk this month.

Chandigarh to Srinagar by train (2026 route)

There is still no direct Chandigarh to Srinagar train, but you no longer need a cab or bus from Jammu. Since the rail link opened in June 2025, and the Vande Bharat was extended to Jammu Tawi on 30 April 2026, you can go all the way by rail with one change at Jammu Tawi or Katra. You sleep through the Punjab plains and cross the Pir Panjal in daylight.

Leg 1, Chandigarh to Jammu Tawi or Katra

Chandigarh to Jammu Tawi is 377 km and costs Rs 235 in Sleeper, Rs 630 in 3A and Rs 900 in 2A. Chandigarh to Katra is 455 km and costs Rs 265 in Sleeper, Rs 725 in 3A and Rs 1,035 in 2A. These are general-quota adult fares. Coming from Panchkula, Pinjore or Kalka? The 14503 starts at Kalka, so you can board it there. From Mohali, the 14503 also stops at SAS Nagar (Mohali) station at 20:47. From Zirakpur, Chandigarh station is a 20 to 30 minute drive.

Leg 2, Vande Bharat from Jammu Tawi or Katra to Srinagar

General-quota fares from Katra are about Rs 665 to 720 in Chair Car and Rs 1,284 to 1,330 in Executive Chair Car. From Jammu Tawi they are about Rs 855 to 1,020 in Chair Car and Rs 1,585 to 1,783 in Executive. Tatkal costs more, so book early.

The best train combinations from Chandigarh

Fastest overnight plan. Hemkunt Express at 22:05, Jammu Tawi at 04:45, Vande Bharat 26401 at 06:20, Srinagar at 11:10. You are at Dal Lake by lunch.

Most relaxed plan (Tuesday and Friday nights). 14503 at 20:35 reaches Katra at 04:47, leaving three hours to catch 26401 at 08:10. Both of its arrival days, Wednesday and Saturday, have a 26401.

Leaving on a Monday night? You reach Jammu on Tuesday, when 26401 does not run. Take 26403 at 13:20 and reach Srinagar at 18:05.

Avoid planning the Hemkunt to 26401 change at Katra. The gap is 50 minutes, and a late overnight train will make you miss it. Change at Jammu Tawi instead, or take 26403 from Katra at 14:55.

Between Katra and Srinagar the line crosses the Chenab Bridge, the highest railway arch bridge in the world at 359 m above the river, and the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge, then runs through the 11 km Pir Panjal rail tunnel at Banihal into the valley. Step by step: Chandigarh to Srinagar by train

1. Book both legs together. Book the Chandigarh to Jammu Tawi or Katra train and the Vande Bharat on IRCTC at the same time. Reservations open 60 days ahead and Vande Bharat seats sell out first in April, May and June.

2. Pick the right day. Vande Bharat 26401 does not run on Tuesday and 26403 does not run on Wednesday, so match your arrival day at Jammu Tawi or Katra to a train that runs.

3. Board the Hemkunt Express. Take 14609 Hemkunt Express from Chandigarh at 22:05. It reaches Jammu Tawi at 04:45 and Katra at 07:20.

4. Change at Jammu Tawi. Wait in the station or retiring room and board Vande Bharat 26401 at 06:20. Keep your ID handy for the security check at the platform entry.

5. Cross the Chenab Bridge. The train passes Katra at 08:10, then Reasi, the Chenab Bridge and the Banihal tunnel before the valley opens up.

6. Arrive at Srinagar station. The train reaches Srinagar (Nowgam) at 11:10. A taxi to Dal Lake or Lal Chowk takes about 25 to 35 minutes.

Chandigarh to Srinagar and Kashmir distance

The Chandigarh to Srinagar distance is about 555 to 560 km by road on the fastest NH44 line, about 590 km if you drive through Jammu city, about 415 km in a straight line and 646 km by rail via Jammu Tawi. Rival sites quote anything from 420 to 680 km. The stage table further down follows the route through Jammu city, which is why its stages add up to about 590 km; the Jammu bypass saves roughly 30 km. Chandigarh to Srinagar by road: route, stops and driving time

The drive is about 560 km and 11 to 13 hours at the wheel, almost all of it on NH44 once you reach Pathankot. The first half is flat, four-lane Punjab highway. The second climbs through the Shivaliks and the Pir Panjal, past Chenab gorges, waterfalls on the Ramban stretch and the saffron fields of Pampore just before Srinagar. Most drivers either leave Chandigarh by 5 am and do it in one long day, or break the trip with a night in Jammu or Katra.

Road status, safety and night driving

The Ramban to Banihal section is where the road gets held up. It can close for hours or days after heavy snow from December to February, or after landslides in the July and August monsoon, and traffic is sometimes run one way. Check the J&K Traffic Police daily advisory before you leave Jammu, cross the mountain section in daylight, and do not start the climb from Jammu after about 2 pm. Fill the tank in Jammu or Udhampur so you are not hunting for fuel in a Ramban queue.

Chandigarh to Srinagar taxi fare and self-drive cost

A one-way cab from Chandigarh to Srinagar costs about Rs 9,000 to 11,000 in a sedan and Rs 12,000 to 14,000 in an SUV such as an Innova, and most operators add a driver night charge if you stop over. Self-driving a petrol hatchback or sedan costs roughly Rs 4,000 to 5,000 in fuel one way, plus tolls. Many travellers take the train to Jammu and hire a local J&K-registered taxi from there, because local taxi unions often do not let outside cabs run sightseeing at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

Chandigarh to Srinagar by bus

There is a direct Chandigarh to Srinagar bus. Private AC Volvo multi-axle sleepers run overnight between the two cities in about 13 to 14.5 hours, with fares from about Rs 1,900 to 2,500, and you can book them on AbhiBus or redBus. Boarding is usually at ISBT Sector 43 or Zirakpur, so check the operator's pickup point.

If you prefer state buses, go in two legs. JKRTC, PRTC and HRTC buses run from ISBT Sector 43 to Jammu in about 8 to 8.5 hours for Rs 500 to 1,000. From Jammu, take the Vande Bharat (about 5 hours) rather than a bus or shared Sumo, which can take 8 to 10 hours on the mountain road. Book a lower berth on the direct sleeper and avoid it in peak winter, when the valley leg can stop for snow.

Chandigarh to Srinagar by flight

Flying is the fastest way from Chandigarh to Srinagar. IndiGo runs nonstop, usually around two departures on most days, and the flight takes about 1 hour 5 minutes. One-stop flights via Delhi exist too, but they take four hours or more and are rarely cheaper. One-way nonstop fares usually start near Rs 3,500 when booked three to four weeks out, and reach Rs 8,000 to 9,000 in late May, June and over Christmas.

Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR) is about 12 km from the city centre. A prepaid taxi gets you to Dal Lake or Lal Chowk in 30 to 40 minutes, and many houseboats in Srinagar send a shikara to meet you at the ghat. Add Vaishno Devi on the way

Chandigarh is the natural starting point for a Vaishno Devi and Kashmir trip, because the Hemkunt Express ends at Katra. Take it overnight, reach Katra at 07:20, do the 12 km trek to the Bhawan (or the helicopter to Sanjichhat), and sleep in Katra. The next morning board Vande Bharat 26401 at 08:10, or 26403 at 14:55 if you need a slower start, and you are in Srinagar the same day with no backtracking. Best time to travel from Chandigarh to Srinagar

March to June brings clear roads, the tulip season in late March and April and the busiest flights, so book trains at least 30 days ahead. September to November is our pick for the journey itself, with stable weather, golden chinars and lower fares. Fly if your trip is short, take the Hemkunt and Vande Bharat if you want the cheapest and most scenic ride, and drive only with an early start or a night in Jammu.
