How to Reach Eddakal Caves in Wayanad

The Edakkal Caves are located at an altitude of 4000 feet.  Auto, cars, and buses may be available from Sulthan Bathery, Ambalavalayal, and Kalpetta to the Edakkal Caves in Wayanad. The nearest railway stations are the Nilambur Road Railway Station which is  38 km away from Edakkal Caves and Kozhikode which is 97 km from Sultan Bathery. The nearest airport is the Calicut International Airport which is located 23 km from Kozhikode. If you are traveling by road you can take the Pinangode road on the Kozhikode-Mysore-Kollegal highway then enter the  Kolagappara-Ambalavayal road.

The route towards the Edakkal Caves in Wayanad goes through beautiful landscapes and sights. The trek up the hill is filled with coffee plantations and will take you around forty-five minutes to reach on top of the hill. The tickets to the Edakkal Caves can be taken from the remote ticket office which is perched high on the top of the mountain. The authorities literally open an iron gate for its visitor to enter the magnificent caves.

The Edakkal Caves in Wayanad may not be the best place for the elderly to visit. A trek for an hour and a half may be needed to reach the gates of the cave. To reach the end destination one has to go through a 1.5 km uphill trek from the parking area below to the top. One has to climb more than 300 steps to enter this stone age site.

The visiting time for the Edakkal Caves in Wayanad is from morning 9:30 to evening 4:30. During this time the lower parts of Ambukutty hills can be reached via the bus and car services available. Jeeps are made available by the DTPC which would leave you to the mid parts of the hill. The entry price of the cave is almost free. It is between 10 to 20 rupees for Indian nationals and 40 rupees for foreigners.
