Covering almost 60,000 square feet of area, the Langkawi Underwater World Aquarium is Malaysia’s largest aquarium and is a home to more than 500 marine and freshwater species of fish, which are approximately 4000 in number floating in 6,00,000 litres of seawater. Few amongst these species are harbour seals, rockhopper, sharks, penguins, giant rays and most importantly the biggest freshwater fish of the World, the Amazonian Arapaima.

Sections at the Underwater World, Langkawi

According to the ecosystem diversity, the complex is divided into three major sections - Tropical Rainforest, Temperate and Sub-Antarctic. There’s Freshwater sections as well which is kind of generalised and you get to see it as soon as you enter. Along with Orange Spotted Stingrays, Silver Dollar, Red-tailed Catfish, you must also have a look at the Arapaimas in the freshwater section.

Tropical Rainforest Section

You will get to see some species of animals and birds along with the fishes here. This section is inclusive of some unique grounded and flight birds which are kept in open space and includes flamingos, Mandarin duck, black swans parakeet, laughing thrush, and a lot more. Some land animals here are snapping turtles, Marmoset - smallest monkeys in the world along with diverse fishes like tinfoil barb, arowana, pacu in the tanks.

Temperate section

This section is the playhouse of fur seals. These social mammals are mostly found at the Atlantic of South America and some other places as well. There is a display of great shows in the large tanks by some of the adult seals during their feeding time. Also behold the black footed African penguins in the underwater 8-meter tunnel.

Subtropical Section

This is the most crowded and popular section of the place and is also called as the ’penguin-arium’. It houses the RockHopper Penguins which can literally hop over the rocks. They grow to a height of 2 feet and their heads are yellow feathered. The visitors can also explore the other parts of the aquarium which are Marine Life Section, feed the fish at the Ponds and the Coral Reef Tanks as well.

Things to do at Underwater World in Langkawi

Don’t forget to watch a short movie at the 3-D Theatre which is about a little prehistoric fish Michael and his life before he becomes a fossil. Inside the aquarium, you will find some amazing shops, cafes and restaurants where you can try your hands. Purchase some glass-carved fish items from the shops and some other souvenirs from the shopping centre inside. You can even try a finger-licking meal in restaurants like Neptune cafe, The Cliff Restaurant & Bar and the Spice market restaurant.
