The wonderland stretching up to 4 kilometers in length has been a result of spontaneous chemical reactions below the mantle of the earth. These have been preliminarily identified as "Basalt Gullies", which has with time converted into soil.  

The most striking feature of the sand dunes of Chamarel Mauritius is that even if the colors are churned and mixed, they are known to separate from each other. A few meters away from the pristine layers resides a reserve park where the visitors can get a glimpse of gigantic tortoises.
