Day 1, Arrival at Colombo, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and Kandy

Your Sri Lanka family trip begins at Bandaranaike International Airport, about 32 km north of Colombo, the country's commercial capital. Your driver meets you at arrivals with a bottle of water and helps you activate the included local SIM card, which Sri Lankan rules register against a passport, so keep one to hand. Then you set off inland towards Kandy.

En route, visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, about 2 hours from the airport. It was set up to feed and house young elephants orphaned in the wild, and today it keeps one of the largest herds of captive elephants in Asia. The herd walks down the lane to bathe in the Maha Oya river at 10 am and 2 pm. Land by about 9 am and you reach Pinnawala with time for lunch before the 2 pm river bath, which is the part children remember. Continue about 40 km, roughly 1.5 hours over the Kadugannawa pass, to Kandy and check in by about 5 pm. Rest for an hour, then your driver takes you the 10 or 15 minutes from the hotel to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic for the 6.30 pm evening puja. Tickets for Indian and other SAARC visitors are LKR 2,500. The hour-long Kandyan dance show starts at 5 pm near the lake (pay at the hall), and the drummers and fire walkers at the end hold every child's attention, but it only fits if you land before about 7 am and catch the 10 am bath at Pinnawala instead. Tell the agent your flight time when you book so the day is planned around it.

For kids and seniors. The temple asks for shoulders and knees covered and shoes off at the entrance, so pack a sarong or a light scarf for each child and slip-on shoes for everyone. Grandparents can watch the river bath from the restaurant terraces across the lane at Pinnawala instead of walking down to the bank.

Day 2, Kandy to Nuwara Eliya via Ramboda Falls and a Tea Factory

After breakfast, check out and drive a few minutes to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. Children head for the giant Javan fig on the great lawn and the orchid house, and an hour is enough. The A5 then climbs into tea country towards Nuwara Eliya.

Stop at Ramboda Falls, a roadside cascade you see from the viewpoint, and at the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple on the hillside above it, run by the Chinmaya Mission and a quiet stop for many Indian families. Past the Ramboda tunnel, the Damro Labookellie tea centre runs a free walk-through where children watch fresh leaf being withered, rolled and dried, then everyone gets a cup of Ceylon tea. Nuwara Eliya still has its red-brick post office and racecourse from the planters' era, which is why it gets called Little England. Check in to the hotel, then spend the late afternoon at Gregory Lake, where pedal boats and pony rides make an easy family evening (a small gate fee applies, rides paid separately). Victoria Park in the town centre has a children's playground.

For kids and seniors. Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,868 metres, and nights fall to around 10°C from December to February, so keep a sweater for everyone in the day bag. The road has dozens of hairpin bends. Seat children prone to car sickness by a window in the front row, and give tablets before you leave Kandy.

Day 3, Seetha Amman Temple and Down to the Coast

Your hotel is in Sita Eliya, a few minutes from the Seetha Amman Temple, the place local tradition links to Sita's captivity in the Ashoka Vatika of the Ramayana. Visit straight after breakfast, before the tour buses arrive. Children like the stream behind the shrine and the rock marks that devotees point out as Hanuman's footprints. Then begin the longest drive of the trip, about 190 km from the hills to the south-west coast. We plan it in stages. Leave by 8 am, stop for tea on the descent past Talawakele and Hatton, and break for lunch by the Kelani river at Kitulgala, where The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed. From Avissawella the road runs through rubber and coconut country to Kalutara.

Arrive by mid-afternoon and check in at your beach hotel at Mahawaskaduwa, Kalutara, about 25 km north of Bentota on the same coast. Spend the rest of the day at your own pace. The children's pool keeps small swimmers busy while the adults sit back on the sand, and the sun goes down over the Indian Ocean right in front of the hotel.

For kids and seniors. If your children are under five or a grandparent finds long car days hard, ask us to add a night in Colombo and split this drive. It is the most common change families make to this package.

Nuwara Eliya to Kalutara via Kitulgala . about 190 km . 5 to 5.5 hours plus breaks . Breakfast included

Day 4, Kalutara Bodhiya and Departure from Colombo

After breakfast, check out and drive into Kalutara town to the Kalutara Bodhiya by the bridge over the Kalu Ganga. The white stupa here is hollow, so the family can walk inside and look up at the painted ceiling. It takes about 30 minutes and costs nothing. From there, the Southern Expressway, the Outer Circular and the Katunayake Expressway take you to Bandaranaike International Airport in 1.5 to 2 hours.

If your flight leaves after 6 pm, drive south first. At a Kosgoda turtle hatchery, rescued eggs hatch in sand pens and children see newborn turtles before they are released to the sea. Then take a 1.5-hour boat ride on the Madu River at Balapitiya, past mangroves and a cinnamon island where you watch bark being peeled. Both are paid locally, and the drive to the airport afterwards is about 2.5 hours. Tip. Reach the airport three hours before an international departure. Keep a pack of Ceylon tea from the Day 2 factory in your cabin bag, because it makes the easiest gift for grandparents back home.

Best Time for This Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Coast Trip

December to April is the best window. The southwest monsoon is over, so the sea at Kalutara and Bentota is calm enough to swim, and Kandy has dry evenings for the dance show and the temple. Nuwara Eliya is cool all year, with the coldest nights from December to February.

From May to September the southwest monsoon brings rain and rough seas to this coast, so children swim in the hotel pool and hotel rates are at their lowest.
