Day-Wise 10-Day Vietnam Honeymoon Itinerary: North to South

Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi, an Evening at Hoan Kiem Lake

Get over your travel fatigue on the first day. Your driver meets you at Noi Bai International Airport and drives you about 45 minutes to Tirant Hotel on Gia Ngu Street in the Old Quarter (or similar), five minutes on foot from Hoan Kiem Lake. Check in and rest after the flight.

When the light goes, walk down to the lake. The red The Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple is lit up after dark and makes the first photo of your trip. From Friday evening to Sunday night the streets around the lake close to traffic and fill with families, buskers and street-food carts, so a weekend arrival is a bonus. Dinner tonight is your own. The rooftop cafés on Hang Gai and Dinh Tien Hoang look straight over the water.

Day 2: Hanoi City Tour, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Temple of Literature and Ngoc Son Temple

Begin your day with breakfast before a full day of sightseeing with your guide. The tour starts at Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, followed by Ba Dinh Square, the Presidential Palace, Uncle Ho's House on Stilts, the One Pillar Pagoda and the Ho Chi Minh Museum, and your guide fills in the history as you walk. Dress with shoulders and knees covered for the mausoleum. Then stop for lunch.

After lunch, visit the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu), home of Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam's first university, and Ngoc Son Temple on Hoan Kiem Lake. If you want to sit down for an hour in the evening, book the water puppet show near the lake, an old Red River tradition performed in a pool of water (tickets extra). Then return to the hotel for the night.

Day 3: Ninh Binh Day Trip, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Tam Coc Boat Ride and Bich Dong

After a hearty breakfast, drive about 2 hours south to Ninh Binh province, the limestone country people call Halong Bay on land. Your first stop is Hoa Lu, Vietnam's capital in the 10th century, where you visit the temples of the Dinh and Le kings. Then continue to Tam Coc for lunch.

After lunch comes the most romantic hour of the north. A local rower takes the two of you in a small boat along the Ngo Dong river, through three low caves and between rice fields and karst cliffs, and many rowers steer with their feet. Back on land, cycle with your partner along the village lanes to Bich Dong Pagoda, built into the side of a mountain. Read more about Tam Coc before you go. End the day with the drive back to Hanoi and a comfortable night at the hotel.

Day 4: Hanoi to Halong Bay, Overnight Cruise, Sung Sot Cave and Titov Island

After breakfast, check out and drive about 2 hours 30 minutes on the expressway to Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Board the White Dolphin Cruise (or similar), receive your cruise briefing and settle into your cabin while lunch is served as the boat sails out between the islands.

Your first stop is Sung Sot Cave, also called Surprise Cave, one of the largest in the bay. Next is Titov Island, also spelt Ti Top. Swim off its small beach, or climb the steps to the viewpoint for a view over the whole bay with your partner. As the sun sets, the crew holds a sunset party on the sundeck. Dinner is Vietnamese, with fresh seafood. Once the other guests head in, the deck is quiet and the islands are lit only by the boats around you. Most couples call it the most romantic night of the trip. Overnight in your cabin.

Day 5: Halong Bay Kayaking and Cooking Class, Then Fly from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City

Wake up for a tai chi session on the sundeck, or take your camera out for the early light, then have breakfast on board. Next, kayak around the Bo Nau area, where the water is calm between the cliffs. Back on the boat, check out of your cabin while the cruise passes Dog Islet and the Ba Hang fishing village. On the way back to the harbour, watch a fruit-carving demonstration and join the cooking class, where you learn to roll fresh spring rolls. Enjoy brunch before you disembark around 11 am.

Transfer to Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport and fly to Ho Chi Minh City, a flight of about 2 hours. This domestic flight is not in the package price, and your agent can add it to the quote. On landing, transfer to Novotel Saigon Centre in District 3 (or similar) for the night.

Day 6: Saigon City Tour and the Cu Chi Tunnels

Have breakfast and head out with your guide. The tour starts at Notre-Dame Cathedral, seen from outside while its restoration continues, and the Central Post Office next door, opened in 1891 under an iron roof. Then visit the Reunification Palace, where a North Vietnamese tank broke through the gate on 30 April 1975, and the War Remnants Museum.

In the afternoon, drive about 1 hour 30 minutes to the Cu Chi Tunnels, part of a network of more than 200 km dug during the war. Crawl a short stretch if you are comfortable in tight spaces, and finish with tea and steamed cassava, the food the fighters lived on. Back in the city, the evening is free. Walk to Ben Thanh Market, or book a Saigon River dinner cruise for two (extra). Return to the hotel for the night.

Day 7: Mekong Delta Day Trip, My Tho, Tortoise Islet and a Ben Tre Sampan Ride

Begin your day with breakfast and drive about 2 hours south to My Tho, watching the city give way to rice fields. Your first stop is Vinh Trang Pagoda, then a boat ride on the Mekong to Tortoise Islet. Lunch is at an orchard garden, among the fruit trees.

After lunch, the two of you sit in a hand-rowed sampan that slips down a narrow canal in Ben Tre, under water-coconut palms. Stop for honey tea with seasonal fruit while local musicians play don ca tai tu, the southern folk music UNESCO lists as heritage. Then visit a family workshop where coconut candy is cooked and wrapped by hand, and taste it warm. Drive back to Ho Chi Minh City for the night.

Day 8: Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne, Sunset at the Red Sand Dunes

After breakfast, check out. Your transfer to Mui Ne takes about 3 to 4 hours on the new Dau Giay to Phan Thiet expressway, past dragon-fruit farms near the coast. Check in to Bamboo Village Beach Resort and Spa in Ham Tien (or similar), where the bungalows sit in a garden that runs down to the beach.

The afternoon is yours. Swim, or book a couple's massage at the resort spa. An hour before sunset, take a taxi a few minutes up the road to the Red Sand Dunes, where the sand turns deep orange in the last light and kids slide down on plastic sheets. Have dinner by the sea tonight. If you asked for the candlelight dinner when booking, this is the evening for it. Overnight at the resort.

Day 9: Mui Ne at Leisure, White Sand Dunes Sunrise, Fishing Village and Fairy Stream

Today is planned by you, and here is how we would spend it. Leave around 4:30 am in an open jeep (book it at the resort desk the evening before, extra) for the White Sand Dunes, about an hour away. Sunrise over the dunes and the lotus lake below them is the photo most couples take home from Mui Ne. On the way back, stop at the Mui Ne fishing village, where round basket boats bring the night's catch onto the sand.

Mid-morning, walk barefoot up the Fairy Stream, ankle-deep water running between red and white sand cliffs. Then spend the afternoon at the pool or on the beach. From November to April the wind picks up and Mui Ne turns into a kite-surfing beach, and a beginner lesson is easy to book. Have a seafood dinner at one of Ham Tien's beach restaurants, where you choose your fish from the tank.

Day 10: Mui Ne to Ho Chi Minh City Airport, Fly Home

Have a last breakfast by the sea and check out. Your transfer back to Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City takes about 4 hours with city traffic, so book a flight home that leaves after 4 pm. If your only flight leaves early in the morning, ask your agent to move your ninth night from Mui Ne to Saigon. Fly home with the memories of your honeymoon, and without ever flying back north.

How Much Does a 10-Day Vietnam Honeymoon Cost from India?

A 10-day Vietnam honeymoon on this itinerary costs about Rs 1.1 lakh to Rs 1.37 lakh per person in total, or about Rs 2.2 lakh to Rs 2.75 lakh for a couple, once flights, the visa and tax are added. The Rs 65,899 package price covers the parts that are hardest to arrange from India: nine nights of stay, the cruise, every transfer, the guide and the entry tickets.

The jeep to the White Sand Dunes and a Saigon River dinner cruise are the two extras most couples add. A 5-star upgrade or a balcony cabin moves the total most, so ask for both prices side by side.

Flights from India and the Vietnam e-Visa

Book an open-jaw ticket. Fly into Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) at the start and home from Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat (SGN) at the end, so the only flight inside Vietnam is the 2-hour hop on Day 5. Vietnam is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of India.

Indian passport holders need an e-visa, applied for on Vietnam's official portal, evisa.gov.vn, and each partner applies separately. A single-entry e-visa costs US$25 and a multiple-entry one US$50, both valid for up to 90 days, and processing takes 3 to 5 working days. Your passport must be valid for 6 months from arrival. Best Time for a North-to-South Vietnam Honeymoon

November to April is the best time for this route, and March and April are the sweet spot. Vietnam's north and south have different seasons, and those are the months when Hanoi, Halong Bay, Saigon and Mui Ne are all dry together.

Is 10 Days Enough? Mui Ne, Phu Quoc or Da Nang for Your Beach Finish

Ten days is enough for the north, the south and a beach, as long as you skip central Vietnam. If you would rather swap the beach, the table shows what changes.

Know Before You Go: Money, Food and Packing

Vietnam uses the dong (VND), at about 270 dong to the rupee (check the day's rate before you change money). Carry US dollars in cash and change them in Hanoi or Saigon, because Mui Ne's jeep drivers and beach restaurants prefer cash. As with any overseas tour package bought in India, 2% TCS is collected on the package price and can be claimed back when you file your income tax return. Travel insurance is not included and is worth buying.

Vegetarian couples eat well on this route if they say so at booking. The cruise kitchen needs about two days' notice for a separate menu, and both Hanoi's Old Quarter and District 1 in Saigon have Indian restaurants. Look for the word chay, meaning vegetarian, and ask for no fish sauce (khong nuoc mam). Ritu, a vegetarian who travelled with us in April 2024, wrote that "the planners took care that we were served with vegan options".

Pack light cotton for the south, a warm layer for Hanoi and the cruise deck between December and February, swimwear and reef-safe sunscreen for Mui Ne, and clothes that cover shoulders and knees for the mausoleum and pagodas. A light scarf helps on the dunes, where the wind blows sand.
