Best Time To Visit Vietnam

Plan your trip during best season to experience the best of this stunning destination

The best time to visit Vietnam is in spring and the autumn season in the months of February to April and from August to October.

The temperature is pleasant and cool with light rainfall. Therefore, making it apt for indulging in sightseeing. Moreover, it is also an ideal time to visit Vietnam for celebrating festivals like Lim Festival, Hue Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Wandering Souls Day, etc., thus, further elevating the experience. Vietnam sees the highest number of travelers during the winter months. In February, the average temperature reaches up to 27°C, 25°C, and 17°C in the southern, central, and northern regions respectively.

Let’s have a look at its weather conditions on a monthly basis.

March - April (21°C-32°C)

The months of March and April are warm and dry in the north, making it a good time to get on an excursion here. However, in Hanoi and around Halong Bay, one can experience quite humid weather along with some drizzles.

With such varied weather, locals can be found wearing thin plastic ponchos, which is a good solution to manage hot weather and rain at the same time.

May - September (24°C to 30°C)

Though, most of the regions of Vietnam experience hot weather all summer long, the farthest corners of the north can still be found chilly. However, the period of May to June can, somehow, be concluded as the best time to visit Vietnam because of the most consistent nice weather all over the country. The northern and southern parts of Vietnam experience rainy seasons, while the middle portion of the country has hot and dry weather.

The weather of Vietnam in May varies from region to region. Different parts of Vietnam have different weather in May, i.e., the southern regions are usually dry and hot, the central regions receive slight rainfall, while the north part receives maximum rainfall during this time.

October - November (15°C to 21°C)

As during the months of October and November, the region experiences not quite hot weather, nor heavy rainfalls; it can also be called as the best time of the year to visit Vietnam. On an excursion to Hanoi, one can experience dry days perfect for sightseeing. While the rest of the country has dry weather with the temperature hovering around 15-degree Celsius.

December - February (17°C to 22°C)

For someone who prefers temperate weather, the winter season can be a good time to visit Vietnam, as it can often get incredibly hot. Moreover, Vietnamese New Year also gets celebrated during this time of the year.

Though the northwest region starts experiencing the dry season from October lasting up to March, this period is the best time to visit here. However, the weather in the mountains can be chilly. On can also experience snow in Sapa, especially in the months of December and January.

Festivals Celebrated in Vietnam

Tet Nguyen Dan: This is the most important Vietnamese festival wherein the local people come together to celebrate the arrival of the spring season as well as the new year. People pay respect to their ancestors and light candles and incense sticks at temples. At night, the markets are all lit up and extensive fireworks and parties take place.

Perfume Pagoda Festival: This is another famous festival celebrated in Vietnam and thousands of pilgrims travel across the Yen Vi river to get to the sacred caves of Huong Tich Mountain. The festival is celebrated with great pomp and show on the 15th day of the first month of Vietnamese Lunar Calendar.

Lim Festival: This is a lively festival wherein you will be able to witness the true traditions and cultures of Vietnam. During this festival the local people of Vietnam come together, dressed in colorful Vietnamese attires to celebrate this Vietnamese festival with great enthusiasm. People in coir sing folk songs and also play games like wrestling, tug-of-war, and bamboo fighting.

Hung King Temple Festival: Hung King Temple Festival is another important festival celebrated by the local people in Vietnam for 4 days i.e from 8th to 11th of the third lunar month of Vietnamese Lunar Calendar. The festival is celebrated to honor Hung Kings, the founders of Vietnam.

Climate in Vietnam

Summer Season in Vietnam

As mentioned before, Vietnam summer experiences different climatic conditions in the north, central and in the south. The northern mountains and tourist destination areas like Sapa and Halong Bay enjoy a temperate sort of climate in the summer seasons, from April to June. The central part of Vietnam is like a bridge between the climatic differences between north and south. The temperature here does not change much over the year, but the precipitation and humidity levels do. Southern Vietnam, around the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City areas, is the hottest part of the country. The average Vietnam weather in May in Ho Chi Minh City region is 29°-30°C.

Monsoon Season in Vietnam

Monsoon season in Vietnam is the predominant one. Monsoon winds regulate most of the climatic conditions in the country. The wet southwest monsoons bring rainfall all over the country, except parts of central Vietnam. July and August are the wettest months in the capital Hanoi. The south, especially the Mekong Delta gets heavy rainfall and hot and humid weather in monsoon. Ho Chi Minh City sees some water-logging and the islands down south get rough sea conditions. The only part unaffected by the torrential rains going over everywhere else is the coastline of central Vietnam. Being located on the leeward side of the Truong Son Mountain Range, it sees very less rain compared to the other places. But when the effect of southwest winds passes, and the northeast monsoon comes into play through September to December, this area receives considerable rainfall.

So to point out one particular best month to visit Vietnam, it would be March. With the humidity and chill both perfectly balanced in the weather, the ushering in of spring is just the perfect time to travel to this country.

Winter Season in Vietnam

Winter in Vietnam is most felt in the northern part. Vietnam weather in December can get really chilly in the Sapa region and Mount Fansipan. There is a high percentage of condensation, and it stays misty most of the times, especially in the solitary valleys or over Halong Bay. The early winter months in central Vietnam experiences some rainfall. Around November - December, the northeast monsoons bring rain in Hoi An and Da Nang regions. They also see some typhoons formed over the Pacific. The late autumn season often witnesses flooding in the old cobbled streets of Hoi An, the town being right by the canals. But winter is the best season to visit Vietnam in the southern part. Once the monsoon clouds are gone, and the sky is clear, the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh areas are pleasantly cool for traveling.

What Travelers Say About Our Vietnam Trips

Shreyas Bn's 8 days trip to Vietnam

Our Vietnam trip was a memorable experience overall. Anne, who organized our trip, was very approachable and friendly throughout the planning process. Everything was well-organized, and after reaching Vietnam, Emi also took responsibility and ensured things went smoothly. Due to weather conditions, our itinerary had to be modified, and we missed the overnight cruise. However, Anne and Emi quickly made alternative arrangements, which we truly appreciated. There were a few follow-ups I had to do regarding our train from Hanoi to Sapa — the one originally promised was changed, but they later corrected it as per my request. The train itself was just okay and not very clean, though the Sapa to Hanoi bus was comfortable. We faced a small challenge at the Hanoi train station while going to Sapa — the driver only dropped us outside, and we struggled to find the right platform. Fortunately, with God’s grace, a kind person at the station helped us, and we managed to catch the train on time. On the first day, one place from the itinerary couldn’t be covered due to weekend roadblocks, which could have been planned better in advance. Also, at a few places, the hotel checkout time was 12 noon, and we had to wait in the lobby for a few hours before the next activity or transfer — this could be improved for better coordination. From the second day onwards, everything went smoothly and was well taken care of. Overall, we really appreciate Anne and Emi’s efforts and support — they made sure we had a pleasant and enjoyable trip to Vietnam.

Abhishek's 7 days trip to Vietnam

The overall trip arrangement was very nice. One thing i would really want trip organizer to improve is the flights should be booked as per the hotel checkin timing bcoz we had to wait for long outside the room and we were too tired but did not have any option but to wait outside. And if flight time can't be adjusted then atleast u should book hotel atleast for that time.
