Best Time To Visit Vietnam
Plan your trip during best season to experience the best of this stunning destination
As the weather in Vietnam varies from north to south, there is no period which can be concluded as the best time to visit Vietnam. Because of change in latitude as well as altitude, the temperature in Vietnam changes considerably over the map. The mountainous north experiences quite different climatic conditions than the deltaic regions of the south. However, Vietnam is in the true sense a universal destination, which means it can be visited more or less during any season, with some slight compromises on behalf of the tourists. Being under the influence of the tropical monsoon climate, Vietnam mostly has two seasons in the broader sense – southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon. But monsoon does not necessarily mean rainfall. The country has its share of dry seasons as well, both hot and cold.
Let’s have a look at its weather conditions on a monthly basis.
March - April:
The month of March and April are warm and dry in the north, making it a good time to get on an excursion here. However, in Hanoi and around Ha Long Bay, one can experience quite a humid weather along with some drizzles. Going downwards to south, here the temperature ranges in between 21 degree and 32 degree celsius.
With such a varied weather, locals can be found wearing thin plastic ponchos, which are a god solution to manage hot weather and rain at the same time.
May - September:
Though, most of the regions of Vietnam experience hot weather all summer long, the farthest corners of the north can still be found chilly. However, the period of May to June can, somehow, be concluded as the best time to visit Vietnam because of the most consistent nice weather all over the country. The northern and southern parts of the Vietnam experience rainy seasons, while the middle portion of the country has a hot and dry weather.
October - November:
As during the months of October and November, the region experiences not a quite hot weather, nor heavy rainfalls; it can also be called as the best time of the year to visit Vietnam. On an excursion to Hanoi, one can experience dry days with an average temperature of 21 degree celsius, perfect for sightseeing. While, the rest of the country has dry weather with temperature hovering around 15 degree celsius.
December - February:
For someone who prefers temperate weather, the winter season can be a good time to visit Vietnam, as it can often get incredibly hot. Moreover, Vietnamese New Year, also gets celebrated during this time of the year.
Though, the northwest region starts experiencing the dry season from October lasting up to March, this period is the best time to visit here. However, the weather in the mountains can be chilly. On can also experience snow in Sapa, especially in the months of December and January.
Climate in Vietnam
Summer Season in Vietnam
As mentioned before, Vietnam summer experiences different climatic conditions in the north, central and in the south. The northern mountains and tourist destination areas like Sapa and Halong Bay enjoy a temperate sort of climate in the summer seasons, from April to June. The central part of Vietnam is like a bridge between the climatic differences between north and south. The temperature here does not change much over the year, but the precipitation and humidity levels do. Southern Vietnam, around the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City areas, is the hottest part of the country. The average Vietnam weather in May in Ho Chi Minh City region is 29°-30°C.
Monsoon Season in Vietnam
Monsoon season in Vietnam is the predominant one. Monsoon winds regulate most of the climatic conditions in the country. The wet southwest monsoons bring rainfall all over the country, except parts of central Vietnam. July and August are the wettest months in the capital Hanoi. The south, especially the Mekong Delta gets heavy rainfall and hot and humid weather in monsoon. Ho Chi Minh City sees some water-logging and the islands down south get rough sea conditions. The only part unaffected by the torrential rains going over everywhere else is the coastline of central Vietnam. Being located on the leeward side of the Truong Son Mountain Range, it sees very less rain compared to the other places. But when the effect of southwest winds passes, and the northeast monsoon comes into play through September to December, this area receives considerable rainfall.
So to point out one particular best month to visit Vietnam, it would be March. With the humidity and chill both perfectly balanced in the weather, the ushering in of spring is just the perfect time to travel to this country.
Winter Season in Vietnam
Winter in Vietnam is most felt in the northern part. Vietnam weather in December can get really chilly in the Sapa region and Mount Fansipan. There is a high percentage of condensation, and it stays misty most of the times, especially in the solitary valleys or over Halong Bay. The early winter months in central Vietnam experiences some rainfall. Around November - December, the northeast monsoons bring rain in Hoi An and Da Nang regions. They also see some typhoons formed over the Pacific. The late autumn season often witnesses flooding in the old cobbled streets of Hoi An, the town being right by the canals. But winter is the best season to visit Vietnam in the southern part. Once the monsoon clouds are gone, and the sky is clear, the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh areas are pleasantly cool for traveling.

Trip to Vietnam
We had no problems during entire trip. Agent Eric was excellent and very helpful. He was very prompt and planned everything in advance. Halong Bay, Vespa ride, bicycle ride, kayaking, Hanoi tour, and Angkor wat.Trip to Vietnam
it was great experience. special thanks to Tuan (Eric) for handling it very wellTrip to Vietnam
The trip had a rough start as my mother, who is a strict vegetarian, was feeling nauseated all the time due to smell of pork and fish. We had to let her stay in the hotel for entire day so that she feels better. We ordered Indian food in the hotel itself. We made slight modifications in our trip to accommodate this and Anna had been super helpful in letting us do it without any hesitations. The hotels were average and could have been better. Also it would have been nice if a tour guide would have accompanied us in Hanoi to tell us about its history and architecture. At other places we really enjoyed with tour guides who explained about the place and educated us about significance of temples. We also had a rough time before the travel as the names of two travellers were spelled wrongly in ticket and visa, which led to confusion till the day we started our trip. Hotels were also changed in the last moment leading to anxiety. Although Anna compensated with other benefits but the overall experience could have been much better. Something to improve. We enjoyed the foot spa and last Indian dinner that Anna arranged for us. 8 cave ride in a boat - it was really thrilling to be inside the caves and one of great experiences. Angkor Wat temple - we watched Tomb Raider immediately upon our return. It was a magnificent architecture.Trip to Vietnam
As per the itinerary the day we land we were to checkin to the hotel and start with the city tour after two hours rest and take the night train to Sapa. The guide told me that we don't have a hotel booking and we would straight head for the city tour directly from the Airport. when i insisted that we have the hotel booking then he spoke to the travel agent and hotel booking was done . Although the hotel was different , but the agent came to the hotel to apologize for the confusion. Other than this there was no issue about the entire trip. it was nicely planned and executed too. The guides were all english speaking and very co operative. Just a small suggestion , the travelers should be informed about the duration of the tour well in advance. Like the walking tour to village in Sapa was for about 4 hours in the hilly area and the next day tour to another village tour was for about one hour. The Halong bay trip was just great. Thankyou for all your effort. There is no option for Indian food in Vietnam, Vegetarians could have a big problem. Those who love sea food , this place is heaven. The prices are very reasonable too.Trip to Vietnam
