Travel To Vietnam

Vietnam lies in the south-eastern part of mainland Asia, sharing boundaries with Laos, Cambodia, and China on three sides and the South China Sea on the east. Vietnam route can be managed from any of its neighboring Asian countries via direct flights, including Thailand and India. The easiest way to get to Vietnam is by flights. The country has three international airports at Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Danang. They are well-connected with the major Indian airports. But one can reach Vietnam via other routes too.

Here’s how to reach Vietnam from India by air, rail, and roadways, given in brief detail:

By Air

India to Vietnam distance by air is around 3000 km more or less from any part of India. There are frequent Delhi to Vietnam flights or Mumbai to Vietnam flights. The three airports in Vietnam that receive international flights are Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, Da Nang Airport in Da Nang and Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. A direct from India’s capital Delhi to Vietnam would take around 7 hours 20 minutes. Most flights make stops at other important South Asian cities like Bangkok and Singapore. The official carrier of the country is Vietnam Airlines. Other international carriers operating in Asia like Singapore Airlines, Air Asia, Air India, Cathay Dragon, Thai Airlines and China Airlines also fly to the Vietnamese airports from various Indian cities.

By Train

China is the only country from where Vietnam can be reached by train. There is no Vietnam train from India. But if one really wants to travel via railway to Vietnam, they have to first fly to Beijing or Nanning in China. From Nanning, the train departs every day at 6:05 PM and takes 11 hours 25 minutes to reach Gia Lam Railway Station in Hanoi. The other one leaves Beijing at 4:10 PM every Thursday and Sunday. This Vietnam route takes longer than the one from Nanning – 37 hours 21 minutes and reaches the same station in Vietnam. The drawback of traveling by the train route is that the time taken is way more than most tourists are ready to afford. From Beijing, it takes more than 2 nights at a stretch. It is not the sensible mode of transport to take, especially for those who are traveling from the southern parts of India. Chennai to Vietnam flights are a much faster option than traveling to China and then taking a train. However, if enjoying a train ride and savoring the scenery along the train route is what one is looking for, then they should go ahead and make the journey.

By Road

It is really difficult to reach Vietnam from India via the road. It is not impossible, but it would take more than 100 hours to cover the distance of 5365 km altogether from Delhi to Hanoi, Vietnam. Moreover, one has to cross multiple international borders – Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia – and then get to Vietnam, which means as many numbers of documents. But it can be easily reached from Laos or Cambodia. There are six border crossing points from Laos and three in Cambodia, which one can cross in their cars. There are Vietnam bus services from Laos and Cambodia as well. While traveling by road, keep the documents and visas ready. The authorities do not provide them at the borders.
