Day-wise Plan: Delhi to Vaishno Devi and Kashmir in 5 Nights 6 Days

Day 1: Delhi to Jammu to Katra | Flight and Vaishno Devi Darshan

Take the morning flight from Delhi and you land at Jammu Airport about an hour and a half later. Your driver meets you at arrivals for the 50 km run to your hotel in Katra, which takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Freshen up and collect your RFID yatra card at a registration counter in Katra (bring photo ID), then start from Banganga within six hours of getting it. If you are fit, walk the 12 km path to the Bhawan. If not, hire a pony at Banganga. Elderly travellers can book the Shrine Board helicopter to Sanjichhat, about 2.5 km short of the shrine. The Bhairon Nath temple sits higher up the same hill, by a steep path or the ropeway. It is optional, and walkers starting on the day they land should skip it. On foot, expect to be back in Katra between 1 am and 3 am, so on Day 2 you leave for Srinagar in the late morning, not at dawn. If that is too long a day, book the helicopter both ways or take the battery car from Adhkuwari, which cut several hours. The night is at your Katra hotel. Day 2: Katra to Srinagar | Into the Valley

Sleep in after the darshan and check out by late morning. The drive to Srinagar is about 230 km on NH44 and takes 7 to 8 hours. The road climbs past Udhampur, runs under the Patnitop ridge through the 9 km Chenani to Nashri tunnel, then crosses the Pir Panjal through the Banihal to Qazigund tunnel and drops into the valley floor at Qazigund. Stop for rajma chawal at a Ramban dhaba on the way. If you would rather skip the road, ask your agent to book the Vande Bharat from Katra, which leaves at about 8:10 am and reaches Srinagar at about 11:10 am (not on Tuesdays, ticket extra). By road you reach your hotel near Dalgate in the evening, so rest. If you took the train, you have the afternoon to walk the Boulevard along the Dal Lake as the houseboat lights come on. The night is at the Srinagar hotel.

Day 3: Sonmarg Day Trip | Thajiwas Glacier

After breakfast you leave for Sonmarg, about 80 km north-east along the Sindh River and 2.5 to 3 hours each way. The meadow sits at about 2,740 metres, ringed by snow peaks, and is the base for several trekking trails. The Thajiwas Glacier is about 3 km from the main meadow, and most people go up on a pony. Sledge rides on the snow are extra. Pony and sledge rates are set by local associations, so agree the price and the route before you start. Zero Point, beyond the Zojila Pass, is reachable only by a local taxi at extra cost and only when the road is open. You are back at the Srinagar hotel by evening.

Day 4: Srinagar to Gulmarg | Gulmarg Gondola

After breakfast, check out and drive about 50 km to Gulmarg, the Meadow of Flowers, at about 2,650 metres. The last stretch climbs from Tangmarg through pine forest. Gulmarg is India's best-known ski resort, and its golf course is one of the highest in the world. The Gondola is optional and not in the package. Tickets are sold online only, on the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal, with no counter at the base, so book them a few days ahead. Phase 1 goes to Kongdori, and Phase 2 continues to Apharwat when it is open. Khilanmarg is a short pony ride or walk from Kongdori. On a clear day Nanga Parbat, at 8,126 metres, is visible from the top. From December to February the road from Tangmarg may need a chained vehicle at extra cost. Day 5: Gulmarg to Srinagar | Mughal Gardens, Hazratbal and Houseboat Night

Check out after breakfast and drive back down to Srinagar, about 2 hours, for an afternoon along the Dal Lake shore. Start at Chashme Shahi with its spring-fed fountain, then see Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, the two largest Mughal Gardens, and end at the white marble Hazratbal Shrine on the lake's northern shore, close to your houseboat. Pari Mahal and the Botanical Garden sit next to Chashme Shahi and fit in only if you reach Srinagar before noon. Each garden charges a small entry fee at the gate. From late March to April, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, open for about three to four weeks a year, can take the place of one garden. Around sunset, take a shikara ride (paid by the hour) past the floating gardens. Then check in to your houseboat on Nigeen Lake, the quieter basin joined to the Dal by a channel, for your last night. Dinner on board is not part of the breakfast plan unless your quote includes it.

Day 6: Srinagar to Delhi | Return Flight

Breakfast is on the houseboat deck before you check out. If your flight is in the afternoon, there is time for Polo View Market or Lal Chowk for saffron, dry fruit and a pashmina. We will drop you at Srinagar Airport, about 20 km away. Reach it 2.5 to 3 hours before departure, because every car is checked at the outer gate before the terminal. Board your flight to Delhi, about 1 hour 30 minutes non-stop, and you are home by evening.
