One of the most famous attractions of the city, the Junagarh Fort in Bikaner is a massive fort right in the heart of the city.

Earlier referred to as Chintamani, the  Junagarh Fort was renamed in the 20th century. The new parts of the city was built around this fort, nearly 1.5 kms away from the city center. The fort is home to several temples, pavilions and palaces, covering an area of 5.28 hectares. The major temples inside the fort include the Ratan Behari Temple and the Har Mandir Temple. The palaces inside the fort include Karan Mahal, Anup Mahal, Ganga Mahal, Phool Mahal, Badal Mahal and Chandra Mahal. There are also a few Bikaneri Havelies within as well as outside the fort, which are worth a look. The famed Junagarh Fort Museum is also a must visit when here, to take a look at the history of the city.

History of Junagarh Fort

Junagarh Fort was built between 1588-1593 AD by Raja Rai Singh and the fort complex was made under the guidance of his prime minister, Karan Chand. Earlier the fort was named Chintamani and later it was renamed to Junagarh which means old fort. The fort has witnessed many invasions and still stands strong. The modern city of Bikaner is developed around this fort.

Architecture of Junagarh Fort

Junagarh Forts is one of few forts in Rajasthan which is not built on the hilltop. The fort is spread in an area of about 5.28 hectares and has beautiful palaces built with white marble and red sandstones, temples, and pavilions. The fort has a mixed style of architecture depicting various cultures and traditions. There are around 37 palaces in the fort with beautiful courtyards and balconies which are adorned with traditional style paintings and artworks.

There are two grand and main gates of the fort which are Suraj Pol and Daulat Pol. Daulat Pol is unique in the sense as it has handprints of the women who have undergone Sati during that time. One can also witness the mirror work, lacquer work and stunning paintings of the Indian art and also of the previous rulers of Mewar. Other striking places within the fort include Badal Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Anup Mahal, Phool Mahal, Har Mandir, and Prachina Museum. The museum has exhibits that showcase the grandeur of Indian rulers and kings like the artifacts, jewelry, weapons, carpets, costumes, manuscripts, and various other things.

It is a top favorite among historians and architectural enthusiasts, due to its mix of architectural styles and the use of beautiful red sandstone. The location of Junagarh Fort is another major attractant for tourists since it rests on the arid Thar Desert, bordered by the Aravalli Mountain Range in the background.
