Salim Singh Ki Haveli, Jaisalmer (Rajasthan)
Udaipur has lakes, Jaipur has forts, and Jaisalmer has havelis to be proud of. The narrow lanes of Old Jaisalmer lead to magnificent havelis. If the breathtaking Jaisalmer Fort attracts travelers to the city, it is the charm of havelis in Jaisalmer that keeps them here.
History of Salim Singh Ki Haveli
Built in 1815, Salim Singh Ki Haveli in Jaisalmer was built by its namesake. Salim Singh Mehta was the prime minister of Jaisalmer kingdom. This beautiful structure served as the home of the most powerful family, the Mehtas. Unlike most royal structures and forts in Rajasthan, this haveli was not created with cement and mortar but the stones were connected with the help of strong iron rods. Famous for its distinctive architecture, the haveli features 38 gracefully carved balconies.
Architecture of Salim Singh Ki Haveli
Constructed using red sandstone, the design of Salim Singh Ki Haveli is said to be inspired from a peacock’s dancing pose. The structure is narrow for the first floors and then, its top floor spreads out into arched balconies topped by pale-blue cupolas. Its peacock-shaped roof is a beautiful sight to behold under the desert skies of Jaisalmer. Several rooms, splendid murals, and frescoes add to the beauty of haveli. The entrance is guarded by elaborate elephants which are a symbol of the heritage of Rajasthan.
Attractions of Salim Singh Ki Haveli
The architecture, carvings, and the excellent craftsmanship of the haveli is a major attraction that lures the tourists to visit this haveli. The beautiful stone carvings, latticed murals, and bracketed walls make Salim Singh ki Haveli attractive and add a royal touch to it. There is also a cupola roof which is blue in color that adds extra charm to the haveli. The haveli depicts Indian art and architecture in a great way.
