History of Moscow  

Early history of the city dates back to the 12th century when it was a town. In the 16th century, the Moscow survived regular attacks by the Crimean Tatars. The ruling Tsar Peter the Great shifted his capital from Moscow to Saint Petersburg in 1712. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Lenin moved the Russian capital back to Moscow on March 5, 1918. After the USSR (Soviet Union) was dissolved in 1991, the city remained the capital of Russian federation and continued to flourish since.

People, language and culture

More than 90 percent of the city’s 11 million population belong to Russian ethnicity. Other residents have roots from Ukraine, Belarus, and Armenia among others. Russian Orthodoxy is the most popular religion in the city. Moscow is known for art galleries and performing arts scene.
