This building was originally famous as the Upper Trading Arcade and was designed by A.N. Pomerantsev. This pseudo-Russian designed building then supported about more than 1000 shops but after being reconstructed in the year 1953, there are about 150 shops now. There are three levels which sell variety of products from clothing to bags, footwear, home appliances, watches, food, cameras and many other stuffs. GUM Moscow History
GUM comes under the project called the Upper Trading Rows that opened on December 2nd, 1893. This passage became the largest in Europe at that time. It covered shopping streets that were inspired from the covered bazaars of the Arab countries. The oldest one out of the lot, Passage du Caire, was built in 1799. Soon, these covered shopping streets converted into stores. The new rows became the most fashionable and technologically advanced European department store in Russian style.
With times, GUM has evolved into an ideal shopping city of Moscow. The place has survived the many blunders and losses that came its way for almost 120 years and has emerged victorious. GUM has become more than just a store from where one can buy everything. This shopping block has plenty of options ranging pharmacy, banks, flower shops, and beyond.
