About Kazan Cathedral in Moscow

Kazan Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals dedicated to Our Lady Of Kazan, in Moscow, Russia.

The first mentions of the cathedral dedicated to the Virgin of Kazan are found in the historical record of 1635 as having been constructed by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky. It was torn down and rebuilt many times during the following centuries for varied reasons. The Kazan Cathedral that is seen in the Red Square of Moscow today was built in the year 1990-1993 by the All-Russian Society for Historic Preservation and Cultural Organization.

The Kazan cathedral is considered to be one of the most important churches in Moscow and has a long and tedious history associated with it. Having started as a simple wooden structure in the reign of Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, which was destroyed in 1632, Tsar Michael I ordered it to be rebuilt as a stone and brick structure. The building of the church that we see as of today is built based on the pictures and plans of its last construction which was overseen by Russian restorer Peter Baranovsky in the year 1929 to 1932.

The Kazan cathedral has an important historical significance too in Russian history and is visited by lots of tourists from all over the world.
