Rated 4.30/5 ( based on 27 reviews )
Kremlin, Moscow (Russia)
Kremlin is the word used to denote the many Russian citadels spread all over the country. Among these, the Kremlin in Moscow is the most famous one of all, and rightfully so. The Moscow Kremlin or simply Kremlin, in short, is located in the heart of the city, on Red Square area. It overlooks the Moskva River to the south, the famous Saint Basil’s Cathedral to the east and the Alexander Garden to the west. Kremlin means a ‘fortress within a city’ and this one has five grand palaces, four cathedrals, the Kremlin Towers and the renowned Kremlin Wall, inside the Kremlin.
History
The Kremlin once used to be a resident of the Russian Tsars. It is now the residence of the Russian President. The Moscow Kremlin history dates back to the days even before the tsars when it used to be the seat of the Grand Dukes. But the current architecture was supervised by Ivan III and the new palaces as well as the Kremlin tower and wall came into being. Over the years the Kremlin building has been the seat of power of the powerful Russian empire and the Soviet Union and now the Federation. It has been used synonymously to the very existence of Russian power, especially during WWII.
Attractions
Among the many attractions, the ones to definitely visit are Kremlin Palace Moscow, Kremlin Armoury Museum, the Patriarch’s Palace and the Twelve Apostles Church, tour of the ancient Kremlin and the sacred monasteries, the Tsar Cannon, Bell and other artillery pieces, and the three Kremlin cathedrals and museums – Archangel, Annunciation and Assumption.
