About Krestovsky Stadium in St Petersburg
The second largest city in Russia, St Petersburg, is also the cultural capital of the country. One of the biggest landmarks of cultural importance is the Krestovsky Stadium. Hosting the 2018 Fifa World Cup, the stadium recently rose to the forefront of the country and was referred to as the St Petersburg stadium during the Confederation Cup as well as the World Cup. The importance of the stadium to Russia cannot be understated.
History of Krestovsky Stadium
The Krestovsky Stadium, St Petersburg, was supposed to have finished construction by the end of 2008 in December. However, by the time 2009 came along, the construction was not yet done. Its completion date was changed to 2011 instead, but it would not open to the public before 2017. The stadium was built on the site of the Kirov Stadium which stood there before it, which was one of the largest stadiums in the world. Named after Sergey Kirov, the stadium was also home to the Zenit Football Club for certain periods in the 1900’s.
Significance of Krestovsky Stadium
The Fifa Confederations Cup took place in the Krestovsky Stadium, with several group matches and the final between Germany and Chile taking place at the stadium. The 2018 Fifa World Cup also took place there, when Russia hosted the competition. In the Krestovsky Stadium, World Cup matches took place, including four group games, one round of 16 matches, the semi-final between France and Belgium and the Third Place Match between Belgium and England.
The stadium is also set to be the site for the 2020 Euro Competition, with one-quarter final match taking place there.
The stadium was an immense help during the World Cup when tourists flocked to the country, and its capacity of 67,000 was a blessing for them.
