Interesting Facts About Catherine Palace

The palace was built as a summer residence by Peter for his wife Catherine I. The residence turned out to be a two-storeyed palace.

Empress Elizabeth had expanded the palace in the year 1733 with the help of two architects namely Andrey Vasilievich and Mikhail Grigorievich.

During World War II, the Amber Room at the Catherine Palace was looted by Nazi Germany’s Army within 36 hours.

The statues which were erected on the palace’s roof and stucco facade were all covered with 100 kilograms of gold.
