About Peterhof Palace in St Petersburg

St Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia, is home to many culturally important landmarks.

However, one of the most important sites of cultural importance in Russia is the Peterhof Palace. It is a series of palaces and gardens which are located in Peterhof, St Petersburg. One of the best features of the area that catches the eyes of the many tourists who come to visit the area is a 16-metre high cliff, rendering it an immensely beautiful natural look.

History of Peterhof Palace

During the 1700’s, Peter the Great, the sea to the north of where the Peterhof palace would later be built was too shallow for ships. To the west, however, the sea was a deep one. He ordered the Peterhof Grand Palace to be built there. He used the palace as a Summer Palace. He would go on to expand the palace further. Fountains were built, and it became extremely beautiful. During World War 2, the Germans captured the palace. The employees were not able to save and bury most of the treasure of the palace and the fountains. Although Russian forces attempted to recapture the town, they were unable to do so. After World War 2 was over, the restoration of the palace began immediately, a process that still continues to this day.

Features of the Peterhof Palace

The Peterhof Palace, St Petersburg has a number of other palaces. However, the largest palace is the Peterhof Grand Palace. Despite looking intimidating from the Lower or the Upper Gardens, the palace is actually quite narrow and not as large as it looks. One of the best features of the Palace is the Chesma Hall. The Hall is decorated with painting from the Battle of Chesma, where Russia won a naval victory during the Russo-Turkish war, and each of the 12 paintings was beautiful renderings of the battle.
