Tabo In Spiti

Tabo sits at about 10,760 feet (3,280 metres) above sea level, on the floor of the Spiti valley in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. That is the figure on Wikipedia and in Survey of India references, and it is the one most travel guides now use. A few older listings put the village nearer 3,050 metres (about 10,007 feet); the gap comes from where the reading is taken, since Tabo spreads out along the river. For trip planning, treat Tabo as a high, dry cold-desert town at roughly 10,760 feet.

About Tabo and the Tabo Monastery

Tabo is a small settlement about 40 km from the Indo-Tibetan border, strung along the Spiti river on the road that links Reckong Peo with Kaza. Snow-dusted ridges close it in on every side. The village itself is compact: around nine temples, an old monastery, a cluster of meditation caves in the cliff above, and apple orchards that turn the valley floor green in a landscape that is otherwise brown and grey.

The reason most people stop here is the Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 CE. It is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries still in continuous use anywhere in the Himalayas, and it is protected as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India. Inside the mud-brick halls, the walls are covered in wall paintings and stucco figures that have survived more than a thousand winters. That artwork is why the complex is often called the Ajanta of the Himalayas.

The monastery marked its millennium in 1996, the same year the Dalai Lama led the Kalachakra initiation here and drew thousands of Buddhists from across the world. He has spoken of Tabo as one of the places he would choose to retire. Above the main complex, the caves cut into the hillside once sheltered monks through the hard winters and are now used by travellers and meditators. How to Reach Tabo

Tabo is a road trip. There is no railway station and no airport in the valley, so every route ends with a long drive on mountain roads. Two approaches lead in, and which one is open depends on the season.

From the Shimla and Kinnaur side, you drive Shimla to Reckong Peo, then on through Nako and Sumdo to Tabo. This road stays open through most of the year, which makes it the reliable winter approach. From the Manali side, the route climbs over Kunzum La to Kaza and then runs the short hop down to Tabo, but that pass is only clear from about June to October. On public transport, the daily HRTC bus for Kaza leaves Reckong Peo bus stand at about 6:30 AM and reaches Tabo in the late afternoon. From Kaza, shared taxis cover the 47 km in under two hours. The nearest airport for the Manali approach is Bhuntar near Kullu, and the nearest broad-gauge railheads are Shimla and Chandigarh, both a full day of driving away.

Best Time to Visit Tabo

The main season runs from May to October, when both roads are clear and the homestays are open. May and June bring mild days of roughly 15 to 25 degrees C with cold nights, and the Manali route opens once Kunzum La is cleared. Tabo sits in a rain shadow, so the monsoon months are dry here, but landslides can still block the Kinnaur road in July and August, so keep the schedule loose. September and early October are many travellers' favourite window: clear skies, the apple harvest in full swing, and thinner crowds.

Winter, from November to April, is the quiet extreme. Because the Kinnaur road stays open when the Manali side is snowed shut, Tabo is one of the few Spiti villages you can still reach, but nights fall well below freezing and only a handful of stays run. Go then only if a frozen, near-empty valley is exactly what you are after.

Acclimatisation and Altitude Safety

At 10,760 feet, altitude is a real part of the trip, not a footnote. The single best thing you can do is gain height slowly. Rather than driving from the plains to Kaza in one push, break the climb with a night at Kalpa, Nako or Reckong Peo before you reach Tabo, so your body has time to adjust.

Watch for the common signs of acute mountain sickness: a headache that will not lift, nausea, breathlessness on mild effort, and broken sleep. Drink far more water than you think you need, skip alcohol on the first day, and rest if the symptoms show up. If they get worse instead of easing, descend. Anyone travelling with young children or older parents should build in a slow, do-nothing day, and it is worth asking a doctor about preventive medication before the trip.

Where to Stay in Tabo

Tabo keeps things simple. The Tabo Monastery guesthouse offers clean, basic rooms right beside the complex and is the classic budget choice. Beyond it, family-run homestays and a few small hotels and camps line the village, with rooms roughly in the Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,500 a night range depending on season and comfort. Rooms are limited and fill fast in June and September, so book ahead in peak season rather than turning up and hoping.

Places to Explore Around Tabo

Tabo works well as a base for the eastern half of Spiti. Kaza, the valley's main town, is 47 km up the road. Dhankar and its cliff-top fort-monastery sit between the two. Further out, Nako is a lake village at around 12,000 feet on the Kinnaur road, while Key Monastery and the crescent lake at Chandratal lie beyond Kaza. Most Spiti circuits string these together over six to eight days.
