About Chandratal Lake in Spiti
Located at an altitude of 4300 m in the Himalayas, the Chandratal Lake is situated on the Samudra Tapu plateau in Spiti Valley. The name, Chandra Taal, originates from its crescent shape. Enclosed by scree mountains on one side and magnificent cirques on the other, this Lake offers breathtaking views of clear blue skies, water, and the rugged topography. The Chandratal Lake at night offers picturesque views of the night sky lit by millions of bright stars.
Known as the camper and trekkers’ paradise, the Chandratal Lake (Moon Lake) attracts thousands of adventure enthusiast from all over the world. Chandratal Lake is extremely famous for its stunning reflections of the surrounding himalayan peaks in clear blue waters. The Chandratal Lake Trek starts from Batal which is 14 km away. The trek is quite adventurous and tedious but the surrounding picturesque views and charm of the place make the efforts worth it.
Chandratal lake is also an official camping site where one can actually spend a night in tents very close to the lake, gazing at the star-lit sky as they experience the magic of nature. Chandratal Lake camp allows visitors to stay in camps, located 2 to 3 km away from the lake and offer a range of facilities from clean and hygienic food, hot water and toilets etc. Some campsites also offer further excursions to nearby places.
Being one of the most famous tourist attraction in Spiti, Chandratal Lake is a trekkers’ paradise and should be visited once in a lifetime.

Should I trek from Batal to Chandratal Lake?
Trekking from Batal to Chandratal lake is an option for you if you want to indulge in adventure and capture the breathtaking views surrounding the place. However, a better way, if you are travelling with a packed schedule, would be to hire a taxi (also available on sharing basis) or cab which may cost around 500 INR to 1000 INR.
Is there any accomodation available near the lake?
Yes, campsites and hotels are available. However, they are not very close to the lake. The campsite is 3-5 kms away from the lake. You can stay here overnight or look for small local hotels at Batal for a night’s stay.
Is there any entry fee for the Chandratal lake?
No. the attraction does not have any entry fee.
