Best Time to Visit Thailand

The short answer, at a glance

 • Go November to February for the best all-round weather. December and January are the driest, coolest and busiest.

 • Chasing lower prices? March and October give near-peak sunshine at shoulder rates; June to September is monsoon and the cheapest time to fly from  India.

 • Beach timing splits by coast: Andaman (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) is best November to April; the Gulf (Koh Samui, Phangan, Tao) stays dry later, roughly January to August.

 • Time a festival: Songkran (13 to 15 April 2026) for the water fight, or the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng lantern nights (around 24 to 25 November 2026) in Chiang Mai.

 • From India: direct flights run 4 to 4.5 hours from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai, and the cheapest trip months are the May to September monsoon window.

Thailand month by month

Use this as your decision table. Weather is the countrywide pattern (the far south runs its own monsoon, covered in the next section), crowds and price track the Indian and Western holiday calendars, and the verdict tells you what each month is genuinely good for.

Prices climb from mid-November, hold through the New Year holidays and stay high until Songkran. If your dates are flexible, the first two weeks of November and the back half of October give you dry-season weather at shoulder-season rates.

Thailand's three seasons explained

Cool season (November to February)

This is the season everyone means when they say 'the best time'. Northeast winds push the humidity out, skies clear, and daytime highs settle into the high 20s to low 30s. Chiang Mai and the north can dip to a genuine chill at night, so pack a light layer. Seas are flat on both coasts, which is why diving, island hopping and honeymoon trips all cluster here.

Hot season (March to May)

From March the mercury climbs, peaking in April when inland cities like Bangkok and Ayutthaya can push past 35 degrees Celsius with heavy humidity. It is a fine time for the beach, where a sea breeze takes the edge off, and it is when Songkran turns the whole country into a water fight. Just plan sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon.

Rainy or green season (June to October)

The southwest monsoon brings Thailand's rain, but not the all-day washout many first-timers fear. Most days deliver a heavy shower or two, often in the afternoon, then clear. The landscape turns lush, waterfalls run full, crowds thin out and hotels drop their rates hard. September is the wettest month nationwide. This is the value-hunter's season, and with a flexible plan it works beautifully.

Andaman vs Gulf: which coast, and when

Thailand's biggest planning secret is that its two coasts have opposite rain calendars. When one side is being rained on, the other is often dry. So if you are travelling in the shoulder or monsoon months, you pick the coast to match the date, not the other way round.

• Travelling December to April? Both coasts are good. Default to the Andaman side for the postcard beaches and the Similan diving season.

• Travelling June to August? Skip the wet Andaman and head to the Gulf, where Koh Samui and its neighbours stay mostly sunny.

• Avoid the Gulf in October and November, its own short, sharp rainy spell, exactly when the Andaman is drying out.

Best time to visit by city and region

The countrywide pattern shifts a little by region. Here is the quick read, with a link to each destination's full month-by-month timing.

Bangkok. November to February is most comfortable for temples and street food, before the April heat and the June rains arrive. The city is a year-round hub, so weather rarely stops a trip here. See the full Bangkok timing guide.

Chiang Mai and the north. Cool season (November to February) is glorious, with cool nights and the Loy Krathong lanterns in November. Best time by traveller and activity

Families

Aim for the December school-holiday window or the cool, dry stretch from November to February, when the weather is easy for kids and the seas are calm for beach days and snorkelling. Prices are highest then, so booking six to eight weeks ahead pays off.

Honeymooners

The cool season delivers the sunset-on-the-water trip most couples picture, with calm seas for island hopping to Phi Phi or the Similans. For fewer crowds at similar weather, target early November or late February.

Divers and snorkellers

For the Andaman and the Similan Islands, the season is strictly November to April; the marine park closes in the off months and visibility drops. On the Gulf side, Koh Tao runs year-round and is at its clearest roughly March to September, which makes it the go-to for a monsoon-season dive course.

Island hoppers

Late November to early April is the reliable window for smooth ferry crossings and open routes across the Andaman. In the June to August monsoon, base your hopping in the Gulf instead.

Budget travellers

May to September is your season. Fares from India bottom out, resorts discount heavily and the rain is manageable if you keep plans flexible. October is the value sweet spot as the rain eases but prices have not yet jumped.

Thailand festival calendar

Timing a trip around a festival can be the making of it, or a reason to book earlier because rooms sell out. These are the ones worth planning for. Lunar-calendar dates shift each year, so the 2026 dates below should be reconfirmed closer to travel.

If you want the lanterns or Songkran, treat them as fixed points and build the trip around them, because accommodation in Chiang Mai and the party islands books out weeks in advance.

Best time to visit Thailand from India

For Indian travellers the calculation has two parts: Thailand's weather, and your own holidays and airfares. The good news is that Thailand is one of the easiest international beach trips from India. Direct flights run about 4 to 4.5 hours from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai, there is no jet lag to speak of (Thailand is only 1.5 hours ahead of IST), and entry is straightforward for Indian passport holders (confirm the current e-Visa or visa-on-arrival rule and any fee before you book).

Line it up with your holidays

 • Summer school break (April to June): this is when most Indian families can travel, and it lands in Thailand's hot-then-early-monsoon window. Weather is warm and prices are moderate. Pick the Gulf (Koh Samui) if you are going in June.

 • Diwali and October: a long-weekend favourite. The rain is easing, prices are still soft, and it is one of the best value-for-weather trades of the year.

 • Christmas and New Year (peak): the finest weather but the highest prices of the year. Book a month or more ahead.

 • Songkran (mid-April): if you have a mid-April break, timing a trip around the water festival is a genuinely great reason to accept the heat.

Budget by season, in rupees

Cheapest and quietest time to go

The cheapest months to visit Thailand are June to September, the heart of the green season, when airfares from India are at their lowest and resorts across both coasts cut their rates. The single best-value pocket, though, is often October: the monsoon is winding down, the crowds have not yet arrived, and prices have not yet jumped to their December highs. If your priority is empty beaches and soft prices over guaranteed sunshine, this is your window. Keep your itinerary flexible, favour the coast that is drier for your dates, and you get a lot of Thailand for a lot less.
