By Flight

Two airlines fly non-stop from Kempegowda International Airport, so there is a direct flight to Vietnam every night of the week. VietJet goes to Ho Chi Minh City on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday in about 4 hours 55 minutes. Vietnam Airlines goes to Hanoi on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in about 4 hours 35 minutes. Pick the airport by where your trip starts. One-stop flights through Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore take 7 to 10 hours and only make sense when they are much cheaper.

Vietnam is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of India, which is why a 23:35 departure lands at 06:00. Both non-stops are red-eyes, and that shapes day one, so our Bangalore packages plan it gently with an early check-in (or a day room), a nap, then an easy afternoon at the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City or a walk round Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi. If you want both ends of the country, fly into Ho Chi Minh City and out of Hanoi (or the reverse) so you never backtrack. Ideal Duration

Five to seven days is the right length for a first Vietnam trip from Bangalore. That covers Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise without rushing. With 8 to 10 days you can add Da Nang and Hoi An in the middle, or finish on the beaches of Phu Quoc. Three or four nights works only if you stay in one region, which the non-stop to Ho Chi Minh City makes easy.

The non-stop lands in Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc is a one-hour flight from there. That makes the 5N/6D Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc package (Rs 34,020 land only) the easiest beach holiday in Vietnam from Bangalore. Best Time To Visit

Weather in Vietnam varies by region, so it pays to match the month to the part of the country you want. Vietnam has a tropical climate with a dry and a wet season. The southwest monsoon brings warm, wet weather, and the northeast monsoon is cooler and drier.

Northern Vietnam

The north is dry and cool from November to March and hot and wet from April to October. October to December is the best time for Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa, with clear skies for the mountains, and September to November gives the best conditions for trekking. December to February is cool in Hanoi (15 to 20°C), so pack a jacket.

Central Vietnam

The central coast runs the other way. It is dry from February to August and wet from September to December, when typhoons can reach the coast, so February to August is the time for Hue, Hoi An and Da Nang.

Southern Vietnam

The south is dry from November to April and gets short, heavy afternoon rain from May to October. November to February is the best time for Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, and November to April for Phu Quoc's beaches.

Vietnam Visa for Indians Travelling from Bangalore

Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam, and the online e-visa is the simplest route. It costs US$25 for single entry or US$50 for multiple entry, is valid for up to 90 days, and is usually issued in about 3 working days. Apply on Vietnam's official e-visa portal with a passport valid for at least 6 months, a photo and a passport scan, and carry a printout when you fly. You may read that Phu Quoc is visa-free for 30 days. That applies when you fly into the island from abroad, and on paper also to a same-day connection that never leaves the airport transit area. At Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, though, domestic flights leave from a separate terminal, so most travellers clear immigration there and need the e-visa. Vegetarian and South Indian food

Vegetarians eat well in Vietnam if they plan a little. Buddhist vegetarian restaurants (look for the word "chay") serve tofu, mushroom and vegetable versions of pho and spring rolls in every big city. Indian restaurants in Hanoi's Old Quarter, District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Phu Quoc serve dosa, idli and thalis. Tell us when you book, and the agent will pre-order vegetarian or Jain meals on the Ha Long cruise, which is the one place you cannot walk out to find food. Learn "khong thit" (no meat) and "khong nuoc mam" (no fish sauce).

Vietnamese Cuisine

If you eat everything, Vietnamese cuisine deserves a slot in your plan. Try these delicacies:

Money and phone

Vietnam uses the dong (VND), and the rupee is not accepted. Carry US dollars to exchange in Vietnam or withdraw from ATMs on arrival. Cards work in hotels and malls but not at street stalls. A local SIM or eSIM with data is cheap at the airport and handier than international roaming.
