Phu Quoc packages from Delhi

There is no non-stop flight from Delhi to Phu Quoc. The quickest way is Air India's afternoon flight to Ho Chi Minh City, a night in Saigon, then an hour's domestic hop to the island. That is exactly how the 5N/6D Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc package (Rs 34,020 land only) runs. Go between November and April, when the island's west coast is calm, and ride the Hon Thom cable car out over the sea to the southern islands. Phu Quoc's 30-day visa exemption covers only travellers who reach the island from abroad without clearing immigration on the mainland (a same-day airside transit can qualify if the airline books it as one). Best Time to Visit Vietnam

Vietnam stretches about 1,650 km from north to south, so Hanoi can be cool and dry in the same week that Hoi An is under heavy rain. Pick the region first, then the month.

Northern Vietnam

Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay and Sapa are at their best from October to April. December to February is cool in Hanoi (around 15 to 20°C), and Sapa can drop close to freezing on January nights, so pack a proper jacket. Snow is a rare event on the highest peaks, not something to plan a trip around. May to September is hot and humid with summer storms.

Central Vietnam

Da Nang and Hoi An follow the opposite pattern. They are dry and sunny from February to August, and wet from September to December, when typhoons can reach the coast.

Southern Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc are dry from November to April and warm all year. From May to October the south gets short, heavy afternoon downpours.

Vegetarian and Jain food

Delhi travellers eat well in Vietnam once they know what to ask for. The word to look for is "chay". Buddhist restaurants serve tofu and mushroom versions of pho and spring rolls in every big city. Learn "khong thit" (no meat) and "khong nuoc mam" (no fish sauce), because fish sauce goes into almost everything. Pure vegans should plan harder. One vegan traveller who booked Vietnam with us said food was the only difficult part of an otherwise relaxed trip. Pre-order cruise meals through your agent and carry a few ready-to-eat packets for long day trips.

Documents, money and safety

• Keep your passport, printed e-visa, flight tickets and hotel vouchers together, with a photocopy of each in a separate bag.

• Vietnam uses the dong (VND) and rupees are not accepted. Carry US dollars to exchange, or withdraw from an ATM on arrival, and change money only at the airport, a bank or an authorised counter.

• Cards work in hotels and malls but not at street stalls, so keep small notes for food and taxis.

• Drink bottled or filtered water, not tap water.

• Cover shoulders and knees when you visit temples and pagodas.
