During the Sri Lankan Civil War of 1981, the library was burnt, leading to the destruction of almost 97,000 books and manuscripts. The ruination was to such an extent that many ancient Tamil and Sinhala books were never recovered. However, the library got restored in 2001 with the entrance statue of Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu deity of knowledge.
