Sri Lanka packs a full month of travel into an island you can cross in a day. In one trip you can climb a 1,500-year-old rock fortress, ride what many travellers call the world's prettiest train through tea country, watch blue whales off the south coast and track leopards at dawn, all within a few hours' drive of each other. For Indian travellers it is one of the easiest trips abroad: a short direct flight, a simple online visa and no big time difference. 1. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress at dawn

Start your trip with the postcard. Sigiriya, the Lion Rock, is a royal citadel built on top of a 200-metre granite plug in the 5th century, with frescoes of court women, a mirror wall and water gardens at the base. The climb is about 1,200 steps and takes 60 to 90 minutes, so go at opening time to beat both the heat and the crowds. For the classic shot looking back AT Sigiriya, climb neighbouring Pidurangala Rock instead, a rougher 30-minute scramble that most travellers rate just as highly. 2. Loop the Cultural Triangle: Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura

Sigiriya anchors Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, where three of the island's eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites sit within a morning's drive. Dambulla Cave Temple is the easiest add-on, five cave shrines under an overhang packed with more than 150 Buddha statues and ceiling murals. Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital, is best seen by bicycle, rolling between the giant reclining and seated Buddhas carved into the rock at Gal Vihara. Anuradhapura is older and holier still, home to the Sri Maha Bodhi tree grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat under. Do one temple properly rather than all three in a rush.

3. Ride the Kandy-to-Ella train through the tea hills

If you do one thing on this list, do this. The slow train from Kandy to Ella climbs for six to seven hours through emerald tea terraces, pine forest and misty valleys, with the doors open and travellers hanging out to feel the breeze. Book a 2nd-class reserved seat a few weeks ahead if you can, or ride 2nd/3rd-class unreserved and stand by the door for the best views. The prettiest stretch is Nanu Oya to Ella, so even the shorter Nuwara Eliya to Ella leg gives you the highlight. It is cheap, it is unforgettable, and it is the single image most people carry home from Sri Lanka.

4. Chase the Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak in Ella

Base yourself in Ella for a day or two of easy hill-country walking. The Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era railway viaduct curving through the jungle, is busiest when a train crosses it, so check the rough timetable and get there early. Little Adam's Peak is a gentle 45-minute walk to a ridge with a view back over the valley, far easier than its famous namesake. Add Ravana Falls and a flying-fox zipline if you have time. Ella is where most travellers slow down, so budget an extra night here.

5. Track leopards on a Yala safari

Yala National Park has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, along with elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and hundreds of bird species. Book a dawn jeep safari, when the cats are most active and the light is best; afternoon drives are cooler on the wallet but quieter on sightings. The park is drier and sightings are more reliable from February to July. If Yala feels too busy, nearby Bundala is the birdwatcher's alternative. A leopard sighting is never guaranteed, so treat it as a wildlife lottery rather than a tick-box, and enjoy the elephants either way.

6. Watch the elephant gathering at Minneriya and Udawalawe

Sri Lanka is one of the best places in Asia to see wild elephants, and you have two very different options. At Minneriya in the Cultural Triangle, hundreds of elephants converge on the shrinking reservoir bed from June to September in what is called The Gathering, the largest seasonal congregation of Asian elephants anywhere. Udawalawe, down south, delivers near year-round sightings of large herds against open grassland and is the more reliable choice outside Gathering season. Both run morning and afternoon jeep safaris. Pair one with your Yala or south-coast leg to save a long transfer.

7. Go whale watching at Mirissa

Off Mirissa on the south coast, the continental shelf drops away close to shore, which brings blue whales, the largest animals on Earth, within reach of a morning boat. Sperm whales, spinner dolphins and the occasional orca show up too. The season runs roughly November to April, when the sea is calm; boats leave around 6 to 7 am and trips last three to four hours. Pick an operator that keeps its distance from the animals and carries enough life jackets. If you are prone to seasickness, take a tablet the night before, because the swell past the harbour wall can be lively.

8. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy houses a tooth of the Buddha and is the most important Buddhist site in the country. Time your visit for one of the three daily puja ceremonies, when drummers play and the inner chamber opens. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and be ready to remove your shoes. Kandy itself, the last royal capital, sits around a lake ringed by hills and makes the natural base for the train to Ella and the Cultural Triangle. If you visit in July or August, the Esala Perahera procession of lantern-lit elephants is one of Asia's great festivals.

9. Sip Ceylon tea in Nuwara Eliya and climb to Lipton's Seat

Up in the cool central highlands, Nuwara Eliya is the heart of Ceylon tea country. Tour a working tea factory to see leaf go from field to cup, then walk the manicured estate rows for the photos. For the best view, drive up to Lipton's Seat, the lookout where Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his plantations, ideally before the midday cloud rolls in. Nuwara Eliya still wears its colonial past in its mock-Tudor hotels and racecourse, and the mornings here are genuinely chilly, so pack a layer for the hills.

10. Hike Horton Plains to World's End

Horton Plains National Park, a high-altitude plateau and UNESCO site, is the one serious walk that almost anyone can do. The 9 km loop takes three to four hours across open grassland to World's End, a sheer cliff that drops around 870 metres with views to the south coast on a clear day, then past Baker's Falls on the way back. Start at dawn and finish the loop before 10 am, because after that the cliff vanishes into cloud almost every day. It is cold up top, so bring a jacket and closed shoes. This is the richer, less-crowded cousin of the viewpoint-hopping around Nuwara Eliya.

11. Make the pilgrimage up Adam's Peak

Adam's Peak, or Sri Pada, is a 2,243-metre cone sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians alike, topped by a footprint each faith claims as its own. In pilgrimage season, roughly December to May, thousands climb through the night up thousands of lit steps to reach the summit for sunrise, when the peak casts a perfect triangular shadow over the hills. It is a demanding four to six hour climb, so start before 2 am, go slow and carry water and a warm layer. Out of season the path is quiet, unlit and often shrouded in cloud, so plan for the season if you want the views and the atmosphere.

12. Wander Galle Fort and the colonial south

Galle Fort, a walled Dutch town on the southwest coast and another UNESCO site, is the easiest place in Sri Lanka to spend a slow afternoon. Walk the ramparts at sunset, browse the gem shops and cafes in restored colonial villas, and watch local boys leap from the lighthouse wall into the sea. The fort pairs naturally with the south-coast beaches on either side, so most travellers fold it into their Mirissa or Unawatuna days rather than making a separate trip. It is also a short hop from the turtle hatcheries along the coast.

13. Surf the south and east coasts: Weligama and Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka has a surf break for every level, and its two coasts trade seasons so there is good surf almost year-round. Weligama on the south coast is the best place in the country to learn, with a gentle beach break, cheap board hire and a wall of surf schools, at its best from November to April. When the south goes flat, the swell moves to Arugam Bay on the east coast, a world-class right-hander that fires from around April or May to September. 14. Snorkel and dive Pigeon Island off Trincomalee

On the east coast, Pigeon Island National Park off Nilaveli is the island's best easy snorkelling, a short boat ride to a shallow reef of live coral, reef sharks and turtles. Trincomalee itself has some of Sri Lanka's calmest, clearest water and the long golden sweep of Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches. The east coast runs opposite to the rest of the island, so this is the thing to do between May and September when the south and west are wet. 15. Meet elephants at Pinnawala, a turtle hatchery, and finish in Colombo

Round the trip off with the gentler, family-friendly stops. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage near Kegalle cares for rescued and orphaned elephants; time it for the late-morning or afternoon river bath when the whole herd wades in. Along the southwest coast, the turtle hatcheries around Kosgoda and Bentota let you see rescued hatchlings before release. Then give Colombo a day: a city tour past the old Fort and Pettah markets, seafood on Mount Lavinia beach, a tuk-tuk ride through the traffic, and the Gangaramaya Temple and Independence Memorial Hall. It is the easiest soft landing before your flight home.

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so it is almost never raining everywhere at once. For the west coast, the south coast and the hill country, where most of this list sits, the dry window is December to March. For the east coast, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, the good months flip to May to September. December to March is the classic all-rounder for a first trip. How to reach from India

Getting there is quick. Direct flights run to Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport from Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and other metros, taking roughly 1.5 to 3.5 hours depending on the city. Six to eight days is the sweet spot: enough for the Cultural Triangle, a couple of hill-country nights and some beach time without rushing. Ten to twelve days lets you add the east coast or Yala comfortably.
